Cycle World RIP

Agreed.
CB had a cluster of good columnists at the same time for a while.
There was Ed and Maynard and one more that I really liked. His name escapes me, but I remember learning he sadly took his own life during the time he wrote for CB. That was back in the Brian Halton days.
(Edit: John D'India? I'm pretty sure I'm right...)
I recall Ed and Maynard having vastly different writing styles. It was hard not to like one over the other, yet there was no wrong answer and there were two solid camps. You were either an "Ed" person or a "Maynard" person.
Kinda like back when TV was still a thing.
You were either a "Leno" person or a "Letterman" person.
Actually, no *kinda* about it.
It was the exact same thing.
Fuck, I miss magazines all together.
Don't get me started on the loss of my weekly dopamine hit called Cycle News.

:thumbup

pretty sure you’re thinking of Mr Joseph Glydon from prior to 2004 … seem to recall that it was cancer that got Mr D’India.

I used to stoop to buying a car magazine in order to get an extra fix of Mr Peter Egan. :laughing :angel

People don't read books and magazines like we did in the past, but we still read and consume content. This seems more like a failure to adapt than anything else. I read Cycle News every week but haven't had a physical copy in decades.

An end of an Era is upon us as Cycle World magazine now is gone - January 1962 to July 7th.
I'm curious why there is no mention of this on their web site: https://www.cycleworld.com/

I have still never forgiven them for killing off the superior Cycle magazine. At least they brought along Ed Hertfelder and Kevin Cameron. I remained a subscriber even through the three or four years when they switched to four issues a year, but "higher quality". Then there was no more print version. I still check their website once or twice a week.

I bought my first copy of Cycle World in 1967. It had a Triumph Saint on the cover. Very sorry to see them go. There were so many great editors and writers there over the decades. Other than Cycle, by far my favorite US moto mag. Now even the good Brit mags have gone downhill/disappeared. :cry

The only magazines we subscribe to are National Geographic, Scientific American, and Costco. I’m looking forward to my first issue of AARP in a few years.

Don't worry, the first people to welcome you to OLD will reach out to you with a premature birthday card when you are 49.5 to welcome you into their AARP arms

AARP has a magazine?? Another reason to love my wife. She likely purges that crap before I can even get a glance.

She knows if it does not have wheels I don’t give a crap. :laughing

Agreed. I’m hoping to be half the writer he was one day..,

Such a great dude and such a wonderful perspective on the sport, we all enjoy.
Cycle/Cycle World was kind enough to publish all of his columns in three books called *Leanings*. My copies are dog-eared and well read.
I completely agree with your thoughts on his writing. I'm convinced reading his stuff continues to make me a better writer in countless ways....to this day.
He wrote with a *voice * that spoke directly to me.
