Dave Chappelle

Hannah Gadsby got dragged into this by the CEO of Netflix and didn't appreciate it, so responded with this:

As for Chappell, the show in the 2000's was definitely his peak, I don't think he cares to recapture that these days. :dunno

Her specials are great.

I watched this and his last special. With comedy it is usually poking fun at the absurd, to which this special follows suit.

What I read from the comments Dave made, is the lack of balance or objectivity, that he finds in the race to offset or cancel comments the Trans community finds offensive.

RE: Da Baby, no issue with the statement that Da Baby's comments were attacking a specific group. The irony presented is in the objection to that behavior yet the acceptance or ambivalence to his involvement in the shooting of a young black man. That it appears the larger offence is to insult the gay or trans community than it is to kill a young black man is the point he is making. “In our country, you can shoot and kill a n—-r, but you better not hurt a gay person’s feelings,” Chappelle says."

I see his comedy going after society at large and not the trans or gay community. Yes, he is using the trans community as an example but the target is a larger one.

That was nothing more than a strawman argument, for me at least. I'd never heard of DaBaby, so in that segment, I learned three things:

- There is a performer named "DaBaby"
- DaBaby has killed someone
- DaBaby made some homophobic comments in a performance that embarrassed even Dave Chappelle.

My resulting opinion is that DaBaby sounds like a real piece of shit. I could stand to get a little more context on his behavior because my sole context of him is Dave Chappelle's lens, but I don't think it will change my opinion of him.

Dave totally seeded that straw man anyway. He spent several minutes talking about DaBaby's homophobia, but only casually mentioned that he killed a person. So it's clear what's important to him, as well.

He's not wrong. On all accounts.

Well, given that Dababy was never charged with murder/manslaughter/or anything other than carrying a concealed firearm after that incident, seems like the shooting was probably justified given that an "altercation" had broken out and somebody allegedly pulled a gun on him when he was with his 2 children both under age 5. Does that make him a piece of shit? Probably not IMO.

His comments at rolling loud or whatever show though.. like what the fuck? Why would you even open a show with those lines. I like his music, but still, wtf were you thinking?

Well ok, if it was self defense then he's not a piece of shit for that. He's still on the hook for his homophobic comments, and now I have some big questions about Dave Chappelle misrepresenting that incident so he could make a bad comparison for his lame comedy show.

We’re gonna start fact checking comedians now? Sounds like a recipe for great comedy.

Seems humour just isn’t your bag but no biggie just find something else to turn your crank.

Don't spend so much time dissecting him or his bits, man. You don't like him. We get it. Think you should just kinda move on from it.

I don't spend this much time on comedians a lot of people think are funny that I don't think are funny.

Not trying to change anyones opinion, just presenting what I took from Chappelle's skit. I don't know what Chappelle's intent was, I only can comment on what I interpreted his message to be. The level of consequence for insulting someone in the LBGQT community is outsized compared to other offences in todays society. He was drawing the comparison between the impact on Da Baby's career / social standing between shooting and killing another black man and insulting the LBGQT community.

That the example started out as LBGQT I expect as happenstance. His issue isn't with the LBGQT community but American society at large. LBGQT is just the example given. Are we to suggest speech is not free if it offends someone?

Vaush has a good take on it. As a public figure, when you misunderstand certain concepts and come into the discussion with unchecked biases, if you're going to be offensive, you should be able to handle the crits.
The thing is, generally for a lot of people, jokes which are based on misinformation are just less funny. Sure, maybe you're able to suspend your knowledge of the subject and feign ignorance about the subject matter but the jokes just don't hit the same.

nah. he's wrong on some accounts. Sex and gender is one of the points he conflates and is the basis of of the team TERF claim.

Not familiar with Vaush before watching this video, but from around 20:00 on towards the end, he really hits home the point that I've been trying to find the words for, as to why I just didn't find Dave's special that funny: That with regards to the topics he made jokes on in this episode, that Dave Chappelle is either very naïve (which I don't believe), or he is actually stupid (which I REALLY don't believe), or that he doesn't actually believe in his own jokes, and is just counting on his core audience to not call him out on it.

Which means he is betting on the naivety of his core audience. Which is really, really disappointing to someone who used to be a fan of his.

Bro, they're jokes. They don't require peer review.
