2003 Gixxer 1000. I made the mistake of letting my sister with her Hands of Death start the bike. It had been running a moment before, and I shut it off so she could try starting it. She pulled the clutch in, and then pressed the start button, but just sort of "tapped" it... enough to start turning over, but not enough to start. She let her thumb off, and everything went dead. No lights, no nothing. Dead.
I've pulled the negative battery cable, waited, put it back on (suggested by someone that it might "reset"). I've checked the 15amp ignition fuse, it's fine. [Checked the 30amp main fuse, it's fine.
I don't know what else to check. I'm absolutely lousy at anything electronic.
Battery was replaced just about a year and a half ago. I haven't had ANY problems with it starting, ever.
Somebody please help, because my Mom's gonna feel really bad when I kill my sister. :|

sounds like she already did.

i'd yank the battery, get it load tested. at 1.5 years old it's unlikely to be dead but it could be. do you keep it on a tender?

bike was running for a little while, stopped then immediately started. that could have drained the battery but not let it recharge for the Sister OF Doom attempt

I don't keep it on a tender, because I ride it a lot.

A full open in the battery would also result in this. How are you testing the fuses? Strictly visually or with a meter? Is there any voltage at all across the battery? If you don't have a DMM, pick one up. They're available for under $40. Dunno what's available in Livermore, but if there's a Fry's equivalent around, they'll have plenty of cheap ones. And for this sort of work you don't need anything more.

I got caught by this recently. Pulled a glass fuse out...looked perfect. Went hunting all over for the problem. You already know the answer...it was the fuse! When I finally checked it, it was open.

I am aware she said that, however she may simply have looked at the fuse rather than actually test it. The fuse may very well have failed.
Remember, KISS(Keep it stupid simple/Keep it simple stupid)
 
Seizing the starter will result in a short through the windings and would either cause you to burn the windings (unlikely, for such a short period of time), or blow a fuse.

I'd still say it's a fuse somewhere.

It's gotta be something simple like a fuse or loose/corroded electrical connection.

Mosquito is coming over, with all the voltage testing stuff, so hopefully we'll be able to figure it out. Then I can let my sister out of the hermetically sealed storage facility she's in... thereby preserving my right to collect presents from the rest of the family at Christmas! :teeth

This exact thing happened to me about a couple of months ago (on a ninja) and it baffled me too.

The diagnosis I got over the phone from Z3n was that it might be the starter solenoid - that it was stuck in an odd position. I gave it a few whacks, but I didn't have anything really solid or blunt to hit it with. And i might not have actually been hitting the solenoid (was still new to the bike).

But just walking the bike for about 100 feet fixed the problem and it started right up again.
