Did you ever purchase alcohol while underage ?

I most certainly did not as by the time I was interested in consuming alcohol alcohol, mothers against drunk driving, was on a tear, and all the laws have been reformed.

The only sensible thing to do was to drag my dad’s homebrewing equipment out of the basement, sign up for a class at great fermentations in San Rafael, and return home with all the materials necessary for a 5 gallon ale run.

I scrupulously follow the instructions and made sure everything was really clean. Brewed it and bottle conditioned and six weeks later triumphantly refrigerated a couple of bottles for me and my dad to try.

As soon as we poured it, we knew that it was gonna be good because it looked and smelled like beer. Then we quaffed a bit and realized it was a dead ringer for liberty ale, the alcohol content was 5 to 6%, and it had a really smooth finish.

My dad offered effusive congratulations on a successful project while carrying cases to his closet to be locked up. Dad drank 90% of that beer and the next batch was done at a friends house. Most of my teenage friends had no taste for what we then called microbrews, so the whole thing is not nearly as cool as it sounds.

I didn't touch a drop of alcohol until I was 24, so no.

Did I buy beer/liquor for my little sister before she was 21, yes. :laughing

Never to buy booze from a store but frequently to get into bars. I bought a hilariously terrible novelty ID when I was in Hawaii on TDY as a 19 year old Airman. If I was in a town that didn't have a military presence I used my real Military ID and 90% of the time would get let in. If I was local to Travis AFB I would use my out of state ID or the novelty one with about a 30% success rate.

As far as having booze in the house to drink, I was Aircrew and travelling overseas for at least 15 days a month. I would buy cases of beer/wine/whatever in whatever country I was in and just bring it home.
This reminds me of my time living in Hawaii after college. I was 26 but my CA license expired while I was there. I learned quickly which places didn't card me. Restaurants, bars, grocery store, even a strip club.

At that point, what was I gonna do? Fly all the way back to California just to renew my license then fly all the back to Oahu? I didn't have that kinda money and I didn't have the documents to get a Hawaii ID. Also means while I was responsible for a work truck and a work van, I was ridin' dirty. They were both insured but I was driving on an expired license.

Something I just thought of and never considered before, are you supposed to be able to pass TSA at the airport with an expired license? Regardless, obviously I did because I got back to CA. I had a date with the DMV immediately. :laughing

POST YOUR GOOD STORIES !

I remember when I was 17 in high school & dressing up in my dads suit & riding down to the store on our Schwinn 10 speeds with highrize handlebars & I went in & was able to buy a bottle of booze .

Another time when I just turned 21 yrs old , I brought a bunch of beer to the counter & they rang me up....
and I asked if they wanted to see my ID & they laughed & said , "we see you here all the time"
I showed my ID with the birth date showing I just turned 21 & the clerk was pissed & waved me on .....

What you got ?
I got pretty much all my hard drinking and drugs out of my system before I turned 21. I turned 21 in July and was over it enough that I don't think I went to a full boat 21+ only Bar until that December as a holiday thing with some co-workers. :laughing

Big nope here. the flip side of looking young means i got carded pretty much without fail until i was at least 40.

had a few times the year after i graduated high school and had a light load of classes at community college that i got the "shouldn't you be in school?"

Was TDY to the Azores and we brought back 2 full pallets of Mateus Rose in our KC-135. One of the crew chiefs brought back a '49 pan head.

yes, in early 2000s highschool it was easy to get at smaller convenience stores in SSF and Daly City

Yep. I was a weightlifter in High School, so I looked bigger and older than my actual age. I also has a mini moustache growing. I would buy beer from the local liquor store during lunch time. I probably got away with it about 8 x's then one day the guy picked up the phone and said that he calling the police. I never tried it again.

Expecting a long thread. Don’t remember not having alcohol, not sure I got it as friends had older brothers. Do remember going to Missouri and buying a guy in the parking lot a bottle if got us something stronger than Kansas 3.2%.

My best friend is a short and baby faced. Anytime we go to a bar or restaurant, they card me because they carded him. By myself, pretty much never anymore.

Friends/family tell me I don't look my age but when I grew a short beard few years ago, kinda fixed that. When I don't get carded, in my head I'm like LOOK AT MY ID, LOOK AT IT.

I grew up in a state where the drinking age was 21 for all alcohol. However, across the border, just steps away, 3.2% beer and wine could be sold to 18 year-olds at stores and in some clubs. Sneaking into those clubs with borrowed or hand-me-down IDs felt like you were really getting away with something. I remember the first time I went to an "18 bar" after I turned 18. I thought it would be a relief not to have to worry about getting caught. I breezed pass the doorman showing a totally legit ID. Once in the club with my friends, we realized everyone in there was under 18 and the fun was gone. LOL. Time to go back across the state line and try sneaking into age 21 bars.

Maybe a little off topic...

One time A buddy and I wanted to go to the Mallard in El Cerrito. That place was a lot of fun when I was in my early twenties. My buddy didn't have an idea, so we got the great (STUPID) idea that he could use an old ID of mine. He was two inches taller with blonde hair, mine was brown. We got to the door man and I gave him my ID. No problem. Then it was my friend's turn. The bouncer guy looked at the ID, looked at my friend and said, You're good" and we walked in. We laughed so damn hard once we got in.

Another time I went to the Mallard because I was getting emails from a secret admirer. She wanted to meet there so I said sure, what the hell. I got to the Mall-turd and started trying to figure out who this gal was. I ran into a girl I knew and I was thinking, hell yeah, she's hot. She and the friend she was with went to high school with me. So we're talking and I'm trying to figure out if it was her. I didn't want to take the chance and come out and ask and she wasn't really giving me any hints. It ended up being a different girl I didn't even know. She was with another couple and we were all talking and decided to go back to my place. They followed me on my bike and as I came to my street I didn't notice the new chip seal gravelly shit they had just put down that day and I dumped it right in front of them. Luckily it wasn't bad. I picked it up and walked it home and we all hung out. Then her friends left, LOL. Good times.

Great thread, keep em coming folks!

this thread seems like more of a guy question. being an underage girl, i don’t recall ever having to ‘purchase’ liquor lol.

i do recall one time going into a liquor store with my dude though. i think he was 19 at the time. and he kinda went against the norm of our friends - he had a fondness for german beer. he walked up to the counter with 2 sixers of dark becks. the cashier rings it up, looks at him, and says ‘you kids are the only ones who buy this stuff’.

Growing up in San Diego, I used to head down to Tijuana for all my party needs. From 16 on I was hitting the bars and nightclubs almost every weekend. In fact, I was completely over the bar scene by the time I hit 21.

When I was I think 16, I hung out with a girl who was 14, and she could buy beer anywhere (drinking age was 21). If we wanted beer, I'd stay outside, and she'd go into a shop and buy it.

Much different than my own experience. I got carded a couple of times in my early 40s. And I wasn't buying a lot of alcohol.

Never tried to buy booze under age, I was kind of a square.

I was so mad when I went to grab a beer at one of the campus bars the day after my 21st birthday (I had a big test that morning so I didn’t go out drinking on my birthday) and they didn’t even ID me. I could have been out boozing with my friends all along. :laughing

When I was 19 and a student at USC, I randomly found a Ca DL in a phone booth in LA. The person was Mexican who sort of looked like me. I used it for two years until I turned 21.

Also… When I was 16, one of my friends had a Magnum PI ‘stache. So we’d drive to a 7 Eleven and he’d “buy up.” That was back in the day when they really didn’t card you. Anyone remember the phrase “buy up”?

yeah. i bought hella booze when i was 17 and living in Türkiye. 🇹🇷

what? that’s underage there! :x

I can't remember my first beer. My parents were German immigrants. They would have certain friends over from time to time, and get me and my brother drunk for their amusement. My parents would buy us cases of beer when we were teenagers. They encouraged us to have parties and kept us well supplied. It really wasn't that big of a deal, and we never got into any serious trouble because of it.
