Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

well think of it this way. the d90/d300 both have 12.3 megapixels. the d700/d3 have 12.1, so relatively close. the d700/d3 have less pixels spread over a larger sensor area. this allows the sensor to run at higher iso's while having a higher quality. thats pretty much the simplest way to explain it, im sure there's more to it than just that.

That's a real shame to hear about the high ISO performance. That's just about the only real reason I can think of for upgrading.

It would be nice to have a couple of extra stops in low light. Usable 3200 or 1600 would be sweet.

I'm okay using the D200 at ISO 1600 in a pinch, but no higher. Like Steve said, the FF cameras have bigger pixels, therefore more light gathering area per pixel, therefore a better signal to noise ration, therefore less noise in your final image.

Is this all in theory, or what?

I just read this over at DPreview:

"When I shoot low light with my 5D I would not dare go above ISO 1600 because of noise. I have no problem using 3200 with my D90 right now. I have to go through a lot of images to find some proof but I believe the 3200 on the D90 is cleaner than the 1600 on the 5D." --Hansen Tsang , Jan 25, 2009; 03:08 a.m.

it is of course all theory, just cause the 5d is full frame doesnt mean it will then be better than any cropped sensor made years later. the full frame advantage makes it easier to have better iso's. the 5d is what, 4-5 years old now? you're better off comparing the 5d mkii or d700 against the d90 or equivalent cropped sensor camera when it comes to iso.

Ahh, good call. I guess I was comparing the D90 with the 5D because, well, the 5D (used) is the closest in terms of price.

Hey Guys,

Have you seen Zack Arias' 365 project? (www.dedpxl.com) He is not generally broadcasting that it exists, but it's been going for about a month now. There is some really good stuff in there already.

Man, that boy just makes me want to pick up my camera every time I look at his site and his stuff.

Good find, Wannabe. I like Zack, he feels like "mini-Chase Jarvis" for his contributions to the photo community. I like his stuff. Not bad for a former Kinkos employee with no formal training in photography. He's inspirational and altruistic--contributing to this idea of 'open source photography'. I particularly like his one-light tutorials.

He was the inspiration several months ago for me to accost ten strangers and ask them for a portrait. My only gripe is that he doesn't update his blog with content as often as Chase Jarvis. That said, his content is good even if it's sporadic.

I'll have to bookmark his 365 and drop in on it regularly. I need to start one of my own, I have been threatening for some time now.

That has changed now. He is taking a break from Twitter and Facebook, and he is focusing on shooting this year. This 365 project has lit a fire under his butt, and he's updating his blog a couple times a week now.

Some of the stuff is cross-posted from his 365 project to his blog, but at least it's getting updated.

As for your own 365 project, it's just a matter of starting. Steve (BrassPremier) started one at the beginning of the year, and it's going really well so far.

This is kinda lighting a fire under my butt too. I may just start one myself now that I finally got off my ass and finished my website.

:thumbup

The only way I'm able to keep up my 365 project is due to the fact that I'm unemployed :rofl

It's hard coming up with a fresh idea every day, and it hasn't even been a month yet. I try to just take my camera out with me when I go out and find a shot the represents the day. Oftentimes I do jack shit around the house, so last minute I gotta come up with something.

It is tough, but I'm enjoying it. And I know that if I can finish the whole 365, I should have a cool gallery representing my whole year.

Zack's 365 seems pretty cool. I like how he explains his setup shots (mainly the lighting). I'm still playing around with lighting, so I'm trying to soak up as many ideas as I can.

It's off-topic but on-topic: I'm shopping for a new camera body. 20D is gone and now I'm debating between the 5dmkii and the 7d... tougher decision than I expected, but I suspect I'll go with the 5dmkii

And a bit more inspiration (well, at least for me.) I guess I got lucky that I figured out what type of photography I want to do early on. I didn't go around for years going back and forth. I knew pretty quickly that I just wanted to do fashion and dance photography. Occassionally, I'll bump into someone's work, and put that at the top of my list and work towards it.

For the dance stuff, I wanted to do stuff like a local photographer named Marti Sohl. She used to dance with the New York City Ballet, so she knows how to really capture dancers. I hope to spit out images like this someday:

On the fashion side, I saw some glimpses here and there. But, today, I think I've found a guy who is the fashion equivalent of what I want to spit out some day:

One of my model friends in Southern California told me that she was excited to work with him next month, so I checked out his work. Damn! I still have a long way to go. But, now, at least, I have a target. :thumbup

Ooh, it's on now!!!
