Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

go into costco and get the d60 with 2 good lenses for a little more then the one you just posted, or say fuck it and buy a canon wich you wont regret later:twofinger

Are canon's really THAT much better?

My buddy told me Nikon's are pretty spectacular too..

You can't go wrong with either brand for a DSLR. The Nikon folks will almost always say go with Nikon, while the Canon folks will do the same thing for Canon.

That said, I use a Canon 30D DSLR.

just preference...

its like ford/chevy rival thing lol...

i think canons color quality is great. and ive had mine for about 3 years and it did me good

I tell you what, Costco has some DEALS on Nikon's! They are beating the scam sites I found that had terrible reviews out of NY/NJ. :laughing

some of the nikon lenses don't work with the D40. or, they don't work very well. getting the D60 is worth it, no matter how much more you spend. if you need to keep the dollar amount low, buy it used from somebody on craigslist.

i spent many, many years of my life selling people one form of gear or another (but not cameras), and if there is one thing i learned, it's that the first time you buy something, it's usually just to figure out what you should have bought.

speaking as a nikon shooter, i recommend canon (see the previous paragraph). generally better low-light performing lenses (which also means better action photography lenses) and generally less expensive. also, there are simply more canon bodies and lenses on the market, which is part of why they are generally less expensive, and it also means there are more craigslist deals.

that said, i agree you can't go wrong. the cameras available today are shockingly good, except for the random dog here and there. don't be afraid to expand your search beyond the big two; you might be pleasantly surprised at the prices you find (think pentax, sony, and fuji), although bear in mind their lens options are usually much fewer.

here are a couple good gear review sites:

best of luck to you!

canon = action/sports

nikon = portrait/landscape

At the risk of incurring mod wrath, where the hell do you come up with that?

I'd take a Canon 5D over almost any Nikon for landscapes, and a D300 over any Canon for action sports.

Unless you get into Pro bodies, then it's Nikon D3 FTW:twofinger

I did notice that the D60 came with the VR lenses. Big bonus and cost difference. It's almost like getting the D40 to D60 upgrade for free.

+1 for DPReview. But stay away from their forums, it's almost as addictive as barf (but without smileys and people can't say f-you) :twofinger

The only lens restriction with the D40 is screwdrive autofocus lenses, which a beginning photographer is not likely to accidentally acquire. However, the D60 follows in the D40's footsteps of not having the focus motor in the body, which means it is similarly restricted. The lenses will still work, they just won't autofocus.

Nikon has made huge strides in their low-light and high ISO performance in the last three years, and is pretty much on even footing with Canon right now.

If you're looking at entry level, the Rebel is probably a bit cheaper, but the 18-55VR kit lens that ships with the D40 and D60 is an astonishing little piece of glass. The 55-200 is also a surprisingly good performer. The Rebel kit lens is generally considered pretty poor, unfortunately. :x

i stand corrected. thanks for the info! :thumbup

The D60 typically seems to come with the "VR" lenses, which stands for Vibration Reduction.

I'm sure Mackey doesn't know what he's talking about. Why don't you do a search for some of the pics that he's taken at Barf Social Gatherings, Trackdays, Events, Parties and every other shindig you can possibly think off.

I take pictures with a disposable FWIW

I bought the, um, XTi thing from Costco (Canon Rebel :confused)

It would be great if it weren't so damned hard to use :cry

Or maybe I'm too old to learn new tricks :laughing

Buy whatever your friends have so you can borrow their lenses.

otherwise, i'd recommend canon (currently the cheapest upgrade path to Full Frame) and better AF lens selection. Nikon has a better manual lens selection

What do you guys think about the Nikon D40?

I found the 18-55 + 55-200 package for about $600 shipped from Crutchfield.com and Ritzcamera.com.

Think thats a solid starter camera and setup?

TIA!

Damn Ducky, you missed it. About a month ago, I bought the D40 for $550 shipped with the 2 lenses. Unfortunately, those lenses don't have the VR though. I have been happy with it so far. My Dad has 2 lenses from his old Nikon and they fit but no auto-focus, but that hasn't been a problem for me since I have been using the 'manual' setting to shoot. Great thing about digitals, screw up?, delete, change setting, and reshoot. I'm kinda getting the hang a bit. The only time I have used the auto-focus feature was during my daughter's award ceremony for sports and that was only because during her acceptance I have only one shot to get it right.

I bought the Rebel XTi when Costco was having a deal.

I like it a lot. I'm a terrible photog and have taken some pretty good outdoor and low-light indoor pics with it:

I've said it before, and I'll probably keep saying it until I'm blue in the face, but a forum can't tell you which camera is going to be right for you. Both Nikon and Canon are excellent in just about every kind of photography any amateur is ever going to be doing, and a whole lot more than that. Its only until you get at the very sharp end of photography that you will really experience the limitations of one system over another, and most of us won't get there. it would be like buying a Yamaha over a Ducati because you like Haga's riding style over Bayliss's.

What you need to do is get your ass down to a photography shop and get your hands on every camera you are considering purchasing. The ergos will be slightly different with each one, and if you're fumbling to remember which dial changes your shutter speed when you need to drop a stop and a half in exposure before you miss your shot, then that's the wrong camera for you.

Good luck!

Here's some pics that I took with the D40. Don't laugh at my manual settings guys, I ain't no photographer and these are the ones that made it out of 50-100 shots. :laughing:laughing
