Just some quick samples, been too busy to go through the rest.

Shot a funk / hip hop show last friday at the Elbo Room for a friend of mine. Dark place, inconsistent lighting, and fast moving performers with a broad range of skin tones made for a very challenging shooting environment. Thankfully some Lightroom-fu bailed me out and then some. I'll probably do a lenghier writeup about it in the near future.

Here's some highlights:

(yes, that's a SEVEN string bass)

Really wanted a shot of band and crowd interacting, and this was the best I got. Wish the MC's looked a little livlier, and i think I need some wider glass to really make this shot sing.

I think they came out well. I went to my brothers concert month ago, and they had i think 2 red lights on the band MAX. So most of my shots came out like this

Next concert of his I brought a flash, and every shot came out like this

I think I need to find a happy medium between the two. Or just take the diffuser off

Your Lightroom-fu is strong, Tyler-san! :thumbup

So what's the difference between these lenses? And which is a better buy? They are both around the same price.

Both Canon lenses

Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Autofocus Lens

Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens

Both Canon lenses

Zoom Super Wide Angle EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Autofocus Lens

Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Autofocus Lens

The 17-55mm is an EF-S lens, meaning it will not be able to fit onto Canon Full-frame sensor bodies, such as the 5d, or 1Ds cameras. It also is a full stop in aperture faster than the 24-105mm lens.

The 24-105mm lens is slower, aperture speaking, but its also one of Canon's 'L' designation lenses, which is there professional grade of lens. Usually this means it has superior optics, but not necessarily in this case. The 17-55mm f/2.8 is considered to be L quality by most who use it, but canon will only put that designation on EF lenses, which are compatible with the entire Canon EOS camera lineup. In this case, the 24-104 will have superior build quality and perhaps some weather sealing to the 17-55mm.

They also cover a different focal range.

Same flower as posted a page or two ago, but this time with 105mm micro. Even at f/9, so much is out of focus, crazy cool lens gotta practice with it some more.

i bought Nikon D80 last Black Friday at Ritz Camera, but until now i'm still trying to learn how to use it! any suggestions which is the best book or DVD to use for learning. thank you!

Is that the Sigma 105mm Macro. I have the same lens and it takes awhile to learn how to shoot macro. The total depth of field is very small in Macro, for that lens at F9 the total DOF is around .070". Here are a couple I shoot of some models I built. They were shot at F22. I'm still learning how to shoot macro and now to do decent model photos I need to figure out lighting.

Even at F22 you can see the rear wing is out of focus.

Froride, what's your product shot lighting setup? I invested in a basic kit for a product shoot I did - totally got it by accident, the shoot paid for the equipment.

I have 3, 500w 3000K incandescents with 40" umbrellas, and a small light cube (cubelite 24"x24"). You're welcome to borrow them - I'm learning too, and don't have a macro.

Also got some strobes for portraits, am still VERY green with those, but learning fast :)

Besides a weekend meet-n-shoot, I think we should do a lighting meet-n-shoot.

Cycle61 and Joebar4000 can lead the lighting seminar.

So when are we having our first meet-n-shoot? And where/what do we want to shoot?

I'd be *way* into a lighting meet. I can light for video pretty well, but strobes/flash, this grasshopper has a lot to learn.

I don't think I would call it a product lighting setup. It was a piece of poster board taped to my work bench. The lighting was the two fluorescent tube light fixture on the back of the bench and a Canon 430EX II Speedlite on the camera. The biggest problem I had was the fluorescents were behind the model and the backlighting was causing shadows where I didn't want them. I also had to turn off the other lights in the garage because they were reflecting off the model. I thought the flash was causing the refelections until I discovered by accident the garage lights were the problem. I have been thinking about buying a light cube. Even the largest 1/6th scale motorcycle model would fit in a 24"X24" cube.

I'd be down for a meet-n-shoot. I'm getting back into photography after a very long break and still learning my camera, Canon 40D, and how to shoot.

:rofl

Let's not go overstating my talent... I have some gear, and I'm learning fast. I reckon Cycle61 would be better at telling ME how to use my stuff.

But, I'm happy to bring my gear. I might be able to bring a (shockingly cute) model. I doubt she'd do nude for strangers, but I do have a pinup shoot with her for her birthday invite flyer next week.

If everyone chipped in 10 bucks, I'm sure I could convince her.

I don't yet have a decent backdrop setup, probably going to Marshall's to get some plain sheets today. Not ideal, but I'm fitting the 'starving artist' category pretty well right now.

On that topic, I'm looking for some sample model releases, that DON'T give me full rights of ownership, but give me a release of liability if they are leaked. Spend some time Googling to no avail... any pointers?

Tyler - Wolf Camera (of all places!) had a nice little Interfit kit that they sold to me for $300, tax. inc. I then got a little wireless remote for $52 from Kamera Korner, 4-channel (but only one receiver so far).

The Interfit kit is pretty darn good for the price. I think I'll need another receiver soon tho, because when you turn down the power on the strobe with the remote, it isn't bright enough to fire the other slaves in the room.

Anyway, by happy cooincidence, I had an old cheapie tripod lying around, and I got a hotshoe-to-tripod adaptor, and can use my camera flash as a slave for the hairlight (and it's focus-able too!), then the 2 Interfits as front lights.

Not very slick or professional, and balancing the power between all of them is fun, but with patience you can get pretty decent results.

I think my Cubelite was like, $80? Makes a huge difference. The only issue is that it requires a lot of light, unless you're OK with using a tripod and remote trigger. With a Macro lens stopped all the way down, you'd probably be looking at several second exposures...

Ana is up for it. She's looking for a suitable picture to entice y'all with :twofinger
