Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

i am shooting a c5z06 tomorrow hopefully. nothing crazy but im excited. clean car ...

if i get anything worth while ill post up!

I may be called upon for some pre-press work in the next few days. I haven't done it in the SB / BA, so I don't know what the resources are. If it happens, the project is essentially a coffee table art book.

What are some good shops for scanning 35 mm color negatives (probably Kodacolor)?

Who could print, and hopefully bind, a pre-press proof / page proof (I would be supplying PDF's from InDesign)?

:wave

Have a Nikon CS2000 scanner all set up. Same as the ones all the labs use for scanning 35mm. I'm working through my grandpa's slides over the next couple of years, but I could divert for a side project. Pro scans from a lab are going to be $0.40 to $1.50 per frame, depending on the level of quality you need. Let me know if you're interested, and how much film we're talking about here.

May be interested. How good are you, really? What's the resolution? 600 ppi? There's somewhere around 250 frames. If I had a transp scanner I could do it, but I'm not good enough to get excellent scans without a lot of time.

My neighbor still needs to drop the first shoe though. If he does that I'm pretty sure the client / investor will be all for seeing at least rough galleys. For that I'd use his Walgreens scans. If that turns it into a go -- and I think that would be likely -- I'd need top quality scans and even $3 or $4 per frame would be OK with me.

If it happens and you do the work, you'll shit the proverbial masonry, epsom salts notwithstanding.

I'm very good with slides, and not too shabby with the negatives either. The resolution is amazing, something like 4000 dpi native on the scanner, which makes for about a 25megapixel image from a 35mm slide/neg. It can pick up grain on Kodachrome 64. :wow And the dynamic range is top of the line as well. If you know the exact film type, I can see if there's a scanner profile available for it, or a calibration target. Easy enough to price that in to a good sized batch job. :thumbup

OK, cool. 2-4k is what I'd want. If he drops the shoe (and he needs to for scheduling) by Friday it's possible and I'll gather all of the info then.

Anytime. Scanning film is almost as much of a black art as shooting it. I'm pretty good with Kodachrome now, and I'm working on a few others. The easiest seems to be the cheap-ass Kodak Gold 200 that everybody shot because it was $1.99 a roll forever. That film sucked at everything except for exposure latitude. You could literally shoot it three or four stops too high or low, and still get a usable image. :laughing The first five or six years of my family pics are on it, before I went digital in late 2002.

Well, now that I have all this free time... Maybe I'll pick up some more slide film again. Last time I had to ship it out cause the few places here I found that could develop it, their scanning cost was obnoxious.

Update on the strobist shoot.

Our friend/lawyer for the Lucy case has offered to use her non-profit as a temporary conduit for donations until the IRS pulls it's thumb out of it's ass and grants us Federal tax-exempt status (had State for a few months now...).

So, can proceed post-haste.

Next weekend is out, how about the weekend of the 18th/19th?

This would be at Doug's place, so the white backdrop would be available. And there's a crap-load more space than at my house.

well, after 2 1/2 weeks of working at my new job i was laid off due to budget cuts. so i may be interested in the shoot, but unsure of whether i can spend money with no income (unsure if i can get back on unemployment benefits yet). I could help out though if needed

Shit, Steve, that blows. :(

I'm pretty sure you can - the original claim can be re-opened. They accidentally closed my claim after a contract gig for just that time, and re-opened it no problem, so I should imagine it won't be an issue.

Strobist Update:

Emily can do the 18th - that would mean no Nick.

Steve, you in? And, do you think Noah would be interested in chipping in a ton?

Tyler, does the 18th work for you?

Here's my issue:

"I have to work on the 19th. Saturdays I am free after 12:00. And I am free anytime M-Th because I work from home those days."

But if we do it mid-week, we lose Doug.

Ideally, it'd be Tyler, Steve, Noah, Doug - and me occasionally.

This would be more formal than last time - 10 or 15 minute chunks, no taking pics between times - she's donating her time as a professional. If she get's pissy, it could fuck me up on the modelling boards.

We may or may not do some stuff in Doug's backyard with natural light.

I'd really like Nick to be there, but I'm running out of dates. The 25th is already booked for a shoot, the 26th I have to get ready for relatives visiting.

OR - we could just stop trying to do this in July and push it back.

Please lemme know your preferences.

Ian - I've got a guest in town that weekend, but as long as the model won't mind if there's an additional person at the shoot (non photog) then I can do. Trouble is, I'd be much happier with the shoot if Nick was there. I'd like to have him there for me to learn from. I'm in no big rush, and am okay with pushing to a later date.

Additionally, Anyone know where a guy can get large panoramic prints made? None of the usual suspects seem to do them. I'm talking something like 12"x45" or so.

Lemme talk to my friends dad, he owns a printing press for an advertising corp.

all my print work goes through whcc.com. Great quality and quick turn around. 12"x45" is not a standard size for them, but they will be able to do it for you. And, free 2-day shipping for orders over $12.
