Digital SLR / DSLR Camera Question / DSLR Thread 2

:thumbup

Strobist info plz. :D

I'm guessing the sunset is the rimlight and something else--maybe an reflective umbrella--at camera left.

EDIT: maybe it's a bare strobe, camera left... hmm.

The first one is all natural lighting. I don't like throwing specific numbers up because it does nothing for you. I just exposed for the ambient and went at it. I actually set up a strobe with CTO gel on it for a bit of cross lighting with this angle as well, but her left nipple kept popping out of her top, so I couldn't use them.

This was the top that I spoke of. I was so busy trying to get the lighting set up and shots framed that I didn't notice that her nipple was sticking out the whole time. :( I took this shot after the sun went behind the cliff. I single Vivitar 285 with the CTO gel at a 1/4 power this time.

The second shot was a couple hours earlier in the day. I just set up some cross lighting with the sun at her back and a Vivitar 285 on a stand at 1/2 power shooting directly opposite the sun. (no gel) I had to play around a bit with the strobe distance to get the right amount of fill, but it worked out.

haha, it's an addiction, yeah?

If you don't mind me asking, what are you firing them with?

Thinking about the V4 version of the cheapo Cactus triggers. Right now I can fire the SB600 because my D70 works as the commander via CLS, something I obviously can't do with the HV285.

Holy crap, Lightroom is ridiculously detailed.

Maybe I'll be going back to shooting JPG.

I went out today and did some street shooting (inspired by the recent blog post by Zach Arias!).

I imported them in to Lightroom, and well, I'm struggling. I'm not sure what liberties are even acceptable and the more I mess with it, the more I'm uncomfortable with what "looks normal". The sharpen filter is a hard one. Out of the camera it looks decent, but if I start dicking around with the slider bar, I'll inevitably wind up with an image that has clearly been oversharpened (these are so freaking easy to spot on Flickr). I like having the ability fine tune and tweak exposure/shadows/blacks/etc, but...

Maybe I can put together an import preset that will approximate my JPG settings from the camera, like XX saturation, sharpen, etc. You guys mentioned this earlier. I should really get on that. What settings do you use for your preset? Do you guys have a decent default present you can post?

dont really have any presets. I'll edit a single photo in a series, make it a rough estimate then paste that development on every shot in the series.

Hey guys, I need to borrow a Canon body next weekend, something like a 30D/40D etc. Anybody have one they can lend me for a couple of days? Thanks. :)

Hey Nick,

My friend has one - can't remember exactly which one, but he is worried his flash might have killed it - have you ever come across this?

He had the flash charged, took the batteries out, put it back on the hotshoe and says he thinks it somehow discharged through the terminals - heard a 'snap' from INSIDE the camera, and now it's dead, dead, dead.

If you have any ideas on how to fix, it's all yours to borrow.

I'd offer my lowly Rebel, but I have shoots this weekend already...

Other than replacing the internal battery and poking around to see if anything's obviously burnt up, I don't really have any suggestions.

Also, doesn't have to be a 30/40d, that's just what I'm aiming for.

I'd let you borrow my piddly XSi, but it's the only body I've got and I shoot pretty much every weekend.

Your XSi takes fine pictures, as I recall. :thumbup

Just concerned about focus speed, I don't know how the rebels compare to the 30d or 40d in that regard. If anybody does have one available, that would be awesome. :)
