For initial registration (out of state) and change of ownership, insurance proof not necessary unless it is a term of your probation. The reason is that CA law requires insurers to cover vehicles for 30 days pending transfer, and DMV does not have electronic access to out-of-state insurance information, so the assumption is you're covered in either case and you're given benefit of the doubt. HOWEVER... If DMV does not receive electronic proof of insurance for that vehicle within a preset time-frame after you register it, they will suspend your registration and charge you a reinstatement fee ($15.00 last I heard) when you do provide insurance proof.

In effect, every registered and plated motor vehicle must be insured. If you delay too long after initial registration or transfer, your registration will be nullified.

I thought they also suspend your license? Thats what they did in FL.

No, just the affected vehicle reg. They suspend your license if insurance proof is part of your probation and you let it lapse.

Thanks. So basically, if I walk into DMV tomorrow to register the bike, I wont have to present proof of insurance but I will have to provide proof of insurance at some stage over the next few weeks?

Not exactly. When you purchase an insurance policy for a specific vehicle in CA, the policy information is electronically submitted to DMV. If they do not get that info, reg will be suspended.

Basically, buying the insurance is all it takes.

hmmm, ya might as well do it now. I wonder if progressive will allow me to add the new bike to my existing policy without too much of a hike

just added the bike there, for some reason I thought Id have to start a whole new policy, sorted :thumbup

the last time I talked to state farm, they only cover new purchases for 14 days. I also thought it was 30 days after purchase you were covered by your current policy, nope!

That's one of the great things with Progressive. You can ADD and DELETE vehicles on your policy. One thing to consider, you cannot alter the coverage on one bike without it affecting the other. For example, I tried to just add a bike with Liability Coverage ONLY while I already have full coverage options on my other listed bikes. I would have had to drop the extra coverages on the multiple bikes so the newer addition get Full Coverage like the rest. Cool thing is it was my 5th on the policy so my premium DROPPED almost $100 from what I was paying and that included the added bike! :thumbup

Geico works the same, sorta - when I picked up my Ural recently I went to the local Geico office and added it to my existing policy. My C50T had full coverage and I was able to drop the collision and comp on it, but keep everything on the Ural. The only limitation is that both bikes have the same level of coverage for the liability and other stuff. Adding the Ural and dropping the collision/comp on the C50 meant that I owed them $88 more than what I paid for the C50 for the year. Once I sell the C50 the Ural will end up being about the same as the C50 for full coverage.
