Hi all, I don’t know if this even belongs here, but here I go.

A month or so ago, I bought a used bike (my first one) and an Integra. Anyway, I went to DMV to change the title over and such. Anyway, the bike title went well, but the car needed to be smogged. So the DMV guy staples the car title to my motorcycle form, then gives me the motorcycle title and with a sheet for my car to get it smogged.

Of course I don’t notice this for a week or so. I get the car smogged and think that they wouldn’t need the title because they already inputted it into the system. I mail everything in and get it returned stating that they need all paperwork for the transfer!

Where should I go from here? I can request a new title, but that would mean I would have to get the previous owner to order that!

I got my motorcycle title just fine btw.

You help is greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure I'm exactly clear on what happened...so the DMV took the title for your car by mistake?

Yes, and attached it to the forms for my motorcycle.

So I received a paper that basically says this car is registered as a "non-operational" vehicle, but I have the original motorcycle title.

Like I said the motorcycle went through just fine.

Thanks

Did you get a Vehicle Transfer Form filled out and have Power of Attorney signed over by the previous owner? I think without either the original title signed by the owner(s) or a POA form, you're screwed. I think you can go to the DMV and get a transfer form/POA form (the POA section is at the bottom) and then mail it to him for a signature. Then once you have that, you can go to the DMV and apply for a duplicate title and sign his name "BY POA".

I think that's how it works, anyway.

I think you should go to the same DMV office, and try and talk with the same DMV person who did your paper work for you.

They (DMV) are the ones that will give you the best answer on what they (DMV) will need going forward.

Do you have a written bill of sale from the previous owner or did you get the title?
Did you go back to the same DMV office and explain the problem and see what they said?

Go here and scroll to this part "What to do when purchasing a car from a private party".

I got a sign paper stating the car and person and just the title.

I am going to head to the same DMV ASAP. I just HATE going down there
