Do any of you ride Fixies?

I like to see his commute in the rain scrubbing off speed like that.

this four-year-old-video goes in a large rectangle around town, starting from a place he was supposedly working , visiting some sights, so I'd bet it doesn't have much to do with his "commute" :laughing

for example he's going through the Broadway tunnel EAST then Stockton tunnel SOUTH* and there is no way to do that unless you're backtracking... (of course probably walking/uphill bits are skipped.) and in-between there was going on Grant NORTH. :dunno

(* Stockton makes double-no-sense because the street lies parallel AND apart to Polk, where "the workplace" were-to-be.)

it basically might be a fun ad-video/film-making-project ;)

Cute that he feels the need to skid in the direction of pedestrians and let off at the last moment. I'm glad he was able to look cool to a 70yo guy walking down the street and thought that this song was a good overlay to his bicycle ride skid party. :laughing

Fixies are for accentuating your skinny jeans, flannel, and handlebar mustache. :later

Guess they get used to changing tires a lot.

Yup, If you follow a pack of fixies down a hill, it smells like a burn out.

That look is known as the lumbersexual.

Fixies make no sense but neither does rap music so I just accept people are into different things and don’t pay them no mind

People love to say this but I've yet to hear a fixie rider complaining about their knees.
Runners, basketball players, tennis players even cyclists on bikes with freewheels I've heard.

No, I don't ride one. I like my knees.

go blow up your knees and plow into cars all you want, just don't get any mustache wax on me.

Do you know any fixed gear riders 45 years or older? No snark implied. Srs question.

Thanks everyone for your responses to my question.

I'm still of the opinion that outside of some of the very specific uses mentioned, they are a step down from normal bicycles for day to day practical use. I'm not really buying the reasoning of cleanliness and weight savings. It's not like we're talking about the difference of looking at the engine bay of an old muscle car vs a modern car that's a rats nest of wires and hoses. Not trying to tell anybody their opinion is wrong, just see it differently, obviously. No harm no foul.

That said, Premium Rush with Joseph Gordan-Levitt as a New York bike messenger on a fixie was a fun action movie. :party

This is probably the most of ever even talked about fixies only because it's the topic of the thread. I don't really care or have a vendetta against fixies. Don't bother me none but I did learn a few things so that's always good.

Can you explain that to me? I'm not trying to be a contrarian or shit disturber at all. I really don't get it. Geared bicycles, even bicycles with one gear but aren't fixed gear are pretty simple machines.

What are the advantages of a fixed gear bike? That's an open question to anyone.

I've never ridden one, but as I understand it the appeal comes from a more direct mechanical connection between the crank in the rear wheel. Because it's a fixed front and back sprocket, there's no tensioner, there's no sideways torque on the chain, and I assume that means there's less middlepeople between the rider's legs and the wheel pushing forward on the road.

... were there any hills in The Mission ofc

which is why all manufacturer's easy-goin bikes, 1 speed are called BURRITOBIKE, MISSION

Before it got popular it was mainly older dudes I'd see riding fixed gear.
Now that now that it's not en vogue, back to mostly older dudes riding fixed. Not for me I like coasting and brakes.

The main advantage of a fixie is aesthetic. No cables, derailleurs or brakes to muck up the lines of the bike, they look super clean. For their original purpose which was racing in a velodrome it was less about being an advantage, more about putting everyone on the same level for competition.

Generally agree, but think that simplicity/minimalism is a better description of the attraction of fixes, than aesthetics. It is kind of like comparing cars to bicycles as your main transportation vehicle, it depends on your perspective.I'd pick a front brake only, single gear freewheel, over a fixed gear, any day of the week.

^ Same. I have a dirt jumper that fits that description. Super fun to pedal around the hood or take to a pump track. :thumbup

I delivered newspapers on my fixie back in the 70's...able to ride up to hidden doors and back out. I raced on the San Jose Bicycle Club down at the Hellyer Velodrome on Saturdays, many times having ridden from Cupertino carrying a spare set of wheels. Also rode around Stevens Creek Damn. Fixie would force you to keep up your leg speed. But get it wrong and it would throw you like a Bronco (happened to a friend, but not me.) Instead of the braking style displayed by Bob in the video, I did more like a bunny hop to stop the back wheel in a straight line.
