I was just looking through some important documents, like my passport, titles of vehicles, etc. and wondering if I should store them elsewhere in case of emergency or fire. I can get one through my bank - standard size is free, but other sizes are at a $20 discount.

Why not just get a fire safe? They're not that much. Something that would hold a passport, some papers, and maybe an external hard drive couldn't be more than $50.

Yes and I have both.

Things I can would hate to lose but wouldn't devastate me if lost. I store in firesafe.

Irreplaceable things go in bank safe.

Ummm yah, at my work I've seen some WEIRD ass shit in people's safe boxes, including a dried up umbilical cord, reallyyyyyyy weird photos, and bones.

Of course there are the boxes who I suspect belong to drug dealers that are stacked with cash and jewels :laughing

20/20 i belive did a show on safe boxes not to long ago and the general consensuses is that they are in no ways SAFE. Banks go out of their way to sell these boxes at auction, quite a few did it illegally and the owners never got their stuff back.:thumbdown

I hope thats not true. I have 3 of them.
The fee is automatically deducted from my account so no reason to auction my shit off.

Aside from jewelry/rare metals or just generally being paranoid and hiding cash, what reason is there to have a safe deposit box?

You can easily replace passports/titles/most critical paperwork in the event that they are stolen or lost.

All of the above :laughing

I have some paperwork that is impossable to replace. The collage I graduated from has since changed it's name. They will not issue a replacement diploma with their original name when I graduated nor under the new name since I did not graduate under that name. Thats just one example but there are plenty of things I don't want laying around my place.

You BELIEVE they did a show? :rolleyes

Many use their safe box for irreplaceable items. IE photos and other memories from loved ones.

Okay, so what do you guys do with passports, titles of vehicles, insurance papers, wills, etc?

When I worked at the bank, I saw some really cool things in people's boxes that they actually wanted to show me.

One lady and daughter came in to get some baseball cards that would pay for the girl's college tuition for that year...and they had a 10"x10" box (the largest safe deposit box size) full of them.

Another time, I had to stick it to this woman and her husband because they were trying to access their father's box without an authorized person being present. They then called their mother to come down who WAS a co-account holder and I accessed their box for them. They had actually wanted to collect the items in there because the father had recently passed away, so I felt a little bad for troubling the widow to come down, but it's bank policy. Anyway, they seemed eager to show me what was inside - which were a bunch of badges. As they explained their father's career to me, it became apparent that this guy was serious stuff. The badges were from what used to be called "The White House Police" before it was later dubbed "The Secret Service." And he had a whole collection of badges through the various name and design changes over what must have been a few decades.

Yes, sorta. Personal fire-proof box that I enclose personal documents, pink slips, and deeds. No need for a bank box.

Passports are kept where they are 24 hour accessible never in a bank safety deposit box

some back up disks, some cash, some jewelry....

Passport, old photos, certified copy of my birth certificate, some jewelry, home-made NSFW videos on DVD, etc. are in my fire safe at home. External HDD goes in when I go on vacations.

Inherited coin collection & vintage jewelry, original birth certificate and some other stuff is stashed in my parents safe deposit box.

Lemme ask all you bank safe people a question. Do you trust your bank after the raping all of them have done?

Call me crazy, maybe it's my view cause I am a jew but I know what happened to all my relatives stuff that they put in banks before WWII. IT'S FUCKING GONE!
