Do You Mountain Bike?

It’s a Gaea, direct import from China. Not a huge investment but a pretty decent bike so far.

surprised i haven't seen this thread.

annadel is my local spot. still learning about all the places around the bay.

got my feet wet and picked up a S-works stumpy in the middle of the first shutdown. got to spend some time in the PNW with that in the later months of the shutdown.

now I've got a 2020 trek remedy 9.9

always down for a few laps anywhere.

I was debating coming out and racing the endurance, but since the GF didn't want to (and now can't), I decided to pass. Too peopley for me really.

My son is doing the Sea Otter for the second time. He said last year was a cluster fuck as the organizers had mountain bikes on the course at the same time as the gravel riders. Hopefully it's better controlled this time, he said there were a ton of hotheads, mtb. vs gravel and vice versa. :rolleyes

The last time I rode there was in 2002? Something like that, for the 24 hours National Championships. We took fifth (top 100% amateur team).

I ran Conti semi-slicks and they were perfect for the course.

I was riding my Alta at Foresthill this morning thinking how similar a ride it was to m Intense Tazer MX...

SWMBO and I ride every Sunday, have been doing so since the pandemic started. To be fair, we don't ride fast; she is 71, I am 65. As stated in previous threads, we ride off-road when the temps aren't too high, and ride coastal trails when they are. Today we rode 20 - plus miles in Calero County Park, up to the edge of Rancho Canada del Oro Park, Bald Peak Trail. Turned around at that point as we were low on H2o and I wasn't sure of directions to get us back to the car park. The park has recently changed up the trails to omni-directional, and I was not sure of the legal way to get us back to the starting point. 1900 feet elevation gain; not bad for an old bird with arthritis and a replaced hip (SWMBO). That describes her, not me (SWMBO is not a derogatory term, from Rumpole Of The Bailey, "She Who Must Be Obeyed":rolleyes: She does very well overall. We don't ride fast but do cover the miles. I told her today that I am going to repeat this ride on my own, carrying on into Rancho Canada del Oro Park. I need to be sure of the trails that will afford us a loop back to the visitor's centre at Calero County Park. Will carry a hydration pack next time instead of a single water bottle. If you haven't ridden in this park, you should. It is really pretty with varied terrain. Lots of water skiers and wakeboarder today on the lake. She is riding a Specialized Turbo Tero 5.0, I am on a Turbo Levo Gen 3.

Hope to meet some of you out there on the trails!!

I have an extra Specialized Turbo Tero 5.0 size medium (hardtail) if anyone wants to give it a whirl. It's a full power EMTB in case you are not familiar. It is rather capable on off-road trails.

I'm always on this forum but have only met a few of you, texted/phone called people.

Who's actively riding MTB? I'm dropping off my little cousin to OAK and was going to bring my bike and ride Camp Tamarancho in Fairfax this Saturday (1/31). Anyone down?

Hi!

I mountain bike in Marin, and am a volunteer with Marin Trail Stewards (formerly known as Access4Bikes), we build and maintain the trails at Tamarancho and elsewhere in Marin, as well as putting on two local races, group rides, etc. You can find about the org and check out our calendar and updated trail information here (the trails get closed when it is too wet, so always a good idea to check the socials when it had been raining)

It'll be a great day to ride Tamarancho! Please be sure to purchase a day pass at https://www.boyscouts-marin.org/event/2026-friends-of-tamarancho-trails-day-pass/3126836 or you can pick one up at Split Rock Tap and Wheel, Sunshine Bikes, or the Marin Museum of Bicycling, which is also the home of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. You will often bump into some of the pioneers of our sport there.

You can park at Split Rock, where you can get your pass before your ride, then enjoy some fine food and beverage after your ride!

After you complete the main loop and are ready to head back to town you'll also to be able to check out the new Caballo Rojo trail.

I'd be happy to ride with you, but Saturday the 31st we're going to be riding up to the top of Mount Tamalpais to attend a "Site Walk" to assess some of the trails up there for potential bike access, which is pretty amazing after being pretty much limited to the fire roads on the Marin Municipal Water District watershed land for the last 30 years!

For anyone who wants to support more bike access in Marin and wants to attend, we're going to riding up from Deer Park in Fairfax, I plan to start at 7:45 to comfortably arrive a little early for the 9am event.

  • Site Walk #1Saturday, January 31, 2026, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Meet-up location: The first site walk is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., and the initial meeting location is near East Ridgecrest Boulevard and Airforce Throughway.
This first site walk will be focused on trails in the vicinity of the West Peak of Mt. Tamalpais. During the walk staff will discuss the environmental settings of the current road and trails, and consider existing uses, conditions, standards, and classifications as defined in the 2005 RTMP and explore updates forthcoming in the RTMP update. Bring water, wear layers, and hiking appropriate attire and shoes. Be prepared for a 1-2 mile hike with moderate elevation gains.

Waterdog and Laurelwood are my local "ride from the house" spots. Weekends I'm often at Skeggs, Montara or Quincy and, if time permits, Santa Cruz or Marin. @peterhively, thanks for all the work your doing in Marin. Was able to experience Tamarancho late last year for the first time. We had a great time and the locals were super welcoming. Glad to see there are a bunch of mountain bikers on the forum! :thumbup

It's been like a year since I've been to Tamarancho but I appreciate the feedback @peterhively I usually park where you mention, ride up and do a couple laps of the flow trail and then head down to the German Mountain Bike Bar where you hang them indoors :)
