I got my (almost) first taste of motocross riding at the Prairie City "beginner" track on Sunday, and would really like to explore the track stuff a little more. I liked that it didn't have any real straightaways, so it took a little more effort to get in trouble.

Now, I probably don't belong on a full size track as I still don't have much of a grasp on the etiquette and courtesies involved. Does anyone know if Argyll has a beginners track or a beginners "session" on their regular practice days? Thanks!

I like that track at PC. They don't get much better than that for a beginner track. It's been a while since I've been to Argyll and they did have a beginner track, or a kids track that's bigger than their little 50 oval, but the track at PC blows it away. Argyll is one of the more beginner friendly tracks, you should consider giving the main track a try.

well, it's too close for me not to not check it out. any idea if they group riders together in groups like they do at road course track days?

If there's a bunch of kids, they'll run like 40min big bikes and 20min small bikes, but tracks around here don't usually refine groups beyond that. Don't underestimate the track at PC, it's an excellent beginner track and if you feel like you're ready for the next level, then you're ready for Argyll. The sand track at MMX is also a possibility, it's just that...while the obstacles are even more mellow than Argyll, the sand can really bite as you get tired/lazy. If you're comfortable in sand, the MMX sand track might be better. If you don't mind, post up when/where you decide. :)

I'm not ready for much more than the pits at this point, haha. I really like the small track at PC, but it's 65 miles each way for me; Argyll is 19. I've been on a bike doing one thing or another for a long time, but have only started riding dirt/off-road in the last year. I have been around the small PC track maybe 10x, so I am a true beginner.

That's okay, you can still get around the track safely and have a good time. I've seen plenty of really new riders out there. In general, you try to stay out of the fast line, but more important is just that you hold your line and make faster riders go around you, don't move for them. Just pretend you're a Prius driver oblivious to anyone behind you and you'll be fine. Also, take a few minutes to watch practice before you ride and see where people are going long/short on jump. For example; always stay to the North side of the big table if you're not going to jump it. You'll see little generalisms like that while scanning around. Maybe even ride little sections of the track where it's safe to hop-on/hop-off and then put it together in pieces. Go during the week for smaller crowds, or on a weekend when there's a race at Club, or 408.

As an aside, if you ever want to start racing, consider joining the OTHG. They have a true beginners class and are generally a very considerate group. Even if you don't want to race, they have at least a couple ride days every year that make membership worthwhile.

thanks for the info dude, that's what i was looking for. thursday's weather looks clear, maybe i'll cruise out there and check it out.

i actually came across the OTHG website tonight as i was looking up beginner motocross info. i don't know how far i'm going to go with all of this, but i will keep it in mind as a resource, seems like a great organization.

I raced with OTHG the last year and a half and live in Vacaville. Shoot me a PM if you head out to Argyll and i'll ride behind you so you dont have to worry about anyone jumping over you. Also, Mike is the track operator and if yuo tell him it's your first time on a track he will let you go out with the kids. On some Saturdays when the really fast guys are there he lets the vet riders go out with the kids as long as we aren't hitting triples or jumping over the kids.

Oh and Argyll is closed today due to the high cross-winds. Call their hot line to see when they will be open next or follow them on Facebook. 925-308-4814 is the Argyll and Club Moto hotline.
