Hi,
The patient: Yamaha 1989 fzr400.

The problem: Lost dowel pins for oil pan.

The hangup: In the fiche it gives a certain part number that is superseded by another, the new part number turns out to be the same as the dowel pin for the alternator cover. The new part does not fit in the oil pan. The diameter of the new part is 8mm, the hole in the oil pan is 9mm. It is not possible to order using the old part number. The dealer is out of the old part. They called Yamaha and they claim that there is no error (i.e. they have not gotten enough complaints about it).

Any ideas/help? TIA

Cheers

Lou

P.S. Personally, I feel that how much people complain about something is not a valid criterion for whether it is or is not a mistake.

since you know the dimensions:
www.mcmaster.com

- search for dowel pin
- select as needed
- figure out what to do with the extra 99 dowel pins you had to order :teeth

you might be able to buy just one from the hardware store, mr metric, or olander orrrr someone else will have a suggestion

Tried it. This particular dowel pin has a bolt through it. All the ones I saw at McM were either solid or the threaded removable type.

Mr Metric does not carry them.

Ditto Olander.

Is there a more specific correct name for it? (Googling hollow dowel pin didn't come up with anything too helpful.)

Cheers

I've got quite a few left over spare crap in my old 400 race-kit.

I'll look through it and post here if I find one.

ooooh. does it have a slot cut down the length of it?

i'd call it a locating sleeve, and offers like the one from enchanter are probably your best bet.

maybe one of the barf machinists can make you one? ask in the sink or general :eek:utofideassmiley

I'd just have some made up. Accurately measure the holes on each side. Both ID and length. note the thread size of the bolt that goes through, sketch up a quick drawing and have them made. 'Shouldn't cost too much.

It wont cost much at all contact resurrection03 @hotmail.com
I'd use an Ejector pin sleave , grind9mm O.D and cut to say 12mm long

Thanks to all.

More information: The 8mm dowel pin fits into the hole in the crankcase :confused

There is no sign of the hole in the oil pan having been bored out or modified in any way.

Does anyone remember this from the fzr400? Do we have a non OEM oil pan (seems unlikely)?

I'm used to the pin holes being the same size on the mating parts. Otherwise, what's the point? Location can be given just as well by the dozen bolts that hold the pan on.

If it turns out that that's the design, then I'm covered with the 8mm pins I have.

Cheers

Lou
