So I thought I'd vent about a crash last friday. I was riding in Santa Cruz, returning with two other riders. I was in the middle following the lead making a u turn at an intersection, probably at a speed of around 5-10 and the next thing I know it I'm on the ground. The bike laid down on the left side with me underneath and I have no idea what happened. The lead rider found a piece of plastic near where I crashed that I could have rode over but I really don't know why I went down, happened really fast. I know for sure that I wasn't going too fast into the turn and the roads were dry, any ideas how to prevent this? Or was it unavoidable with the plastic debris in the road? Just thought I'd share because most wrecks I've had they cause of the wreck was easy to identify, not so in this case. Maybe the tires just lost traction.
 
Too much front brake can take you down abruptly in tight maneuvers. Could that be the cause?
 
that could be it, what should you do if you are entering a turn and need to breakas you are going in to it for whatever reason? Thanks!

i usually cover the rear in parking lot/low speed situations, its at least better than grabbing a fistful of front

I would think that you should cut speed before entering the turn and then use clutch control and a wee bit of rear break if you must while doing a slow speed u-turn maneuver. Also keeping rear tire pulling at all times is good. If you suddenly cut the throttle off and try to coast you could lose traction, lean clearance and momentum. Also shifting your weight to the outside peg allows you to turn tighter and helps in keeping the bike more upright during a turn. This is just from what I've read and what I was taught at my MSF course but I may be wrong.

I went down on highway 9 under similar circumstances. Conditions were clean and dry. I went in a little over my head on a u-turn and grabbed at the front brake. I went down almost instantly.

You should always set your speed before entering a turn.
