The bike in the photo is the MCN artist's rendering of what they're guessing the bike might look like. They also think it should have about 200 hp and that they will only make enough to homologate it for racing. They estimated the price at about $50K.

It's all wild speculation until Ducati actually makes the announcement.

I don't think honda "has to do anything"... but I agree with the homologation/cost estimate. not likely in anyone's near future. kindof like the FP1 would be. sure would like to see more than inlines on the street and with time I think we will. I also believe I read the motogp rules have been or will be changed within the next couple of years to allow 6cyl bikes which is funny since honda is already developing one. sidenote in 07 motogp is going to limit the displacement to 900cc and a higher weight than the current limit.

MotoGP rules already allow six or more cylinders. But they have a weight disadvantage. Here's a quote from a Honda site:

From: http://www.honda-wgp.com/rc211v/challenge01.html
The guideline of new regulation for 500cc four-stroke machine was worked out in 2000. According to the FIM press release distributed in April 2000, major standards are as follows. 1) Maximum displacement: 990cc (351cc - 500cc for two strokers). 2) Minimum weight: 135 kg for single- to three-cylinders, 145 kg for four- to five-cylinders, and 155 kg for above (101 kg for single- to two-cylinders, 116 kg for three-cylinders, 131 for four-cylinders two strokers).
That's 155 kg for bikes with more than five cylinders. There is nothing, other than a weight penalty, stopping anybody from building a 6-cylinder MotoGP bike.

I wouldn't be surprised if under all that bodywork - its powered by a 999 derived motor - hahahaha. Check out the 999 style muffler, brake rotors, and wheels. Seems like relatively un *bling* stuff for a "Moto GP" rep. Although - the forks are very bling!

BTW - I am not sure what SBK races you've been watching - but the 999 has had a pretty good run.....(anyone heard the name Hodgson before??).

so good that they're running slower lap times? alot of the teams are having trouble setting up the bike. why do you think franky chili switched back to his 998?

Ducati seems to get away with high cost homologated racers whereas Honda took a lot of stick in regards to cost and quantity on the RC30 (15K) and the RC45 (27K)... basically the RC's sat on the dealers floor like show pieces for years before moving out the door... that all changed with the lower cost but higher quantity RC51 and currently it could be the guiding thinking behind releasing the new
CBR100RR as a line 4 instead of the more expensive V4... Never mind the 50K NR750...

Well I heard it will be over $25k, even closer to $30k
USD

It wouldn't make sense for them to introduce another
bike in the <$20k range, when their 999s are only two
years old, I doubt they have recovered their 999
development costs enough that they would be willing to
sell the GP Replica <$20k.

Sweet bike nonetheless.

It sounds like an awesome bike! But at 50K...it's a lot of money to pay for a bike that will have a lot more potencial than I will ever have. I would rather spend the 50K on the following:

1. buy a track bike ~$8.5K
2. performance parts for the bike (suspension, lighter wheels, rearset, etc) ~$3K
3. buy a truck ~$20K
4. misc. equipment (bike stands, tools, etc.) ~$1.5K
5. sign up for every single trackdays or schools in the area. ~$2K
6. money to travel to track days.

If I can do all the trackdays or schools in one season in the area (Laguna, Infineon, T-hill, BW), I believe I will be faster on any given bike. The fun, knowledge and skills I learn at the track are far more valuable to me than a bling bike.

And let's just say if money isn't an issue...I will buy a big plot of land, build some race tracks (1 for road, 1 for motard, and 1 for Moto-X) and invite all BARF members to come and ride for free!

As Kblade said, GP is downsizing to 900cc.

Thus everyone needs a new design.....wouldn't be surprised if some of the older bikes end up as toned down production models.

Supposedly Honda has already developed their new 900cc motor by removing one cylinder. There are also rumors if the smaller factories don't do well in GP over the next 1-2 years, they'll probably return to WSBK or other regional production series.

From ducati.com today:

"...It's the engine of the Desmosedici RR, the street-legal replica of the MotoGP bike that Ducati will start delivering in 2006."

Yes, some teams are having trouble - Last I checked the factory team wasn't one of them. Chili switched b/c his 998 had already two years of development under its belt, and being a smaller team, doesn't have the resources the factory teams have. Also if you are up on your SBK game, you'd know that many of the slower lap times and setup problems were a result of the switch to Pirelli tires - which the teams cannot comment extensively about, as they have signed and agreement which will penalize (financially) them if they bash the tires.

Sheeshh....
