DUNE

TBH I thought Brad Dourif was a better Piter de Vries

Who?

Who speak you of?

In the new one, this character has no name that is ever spoken.

Or did I sleep through that moment? He's pictured, he acts, he says a couple of lines, but at no point is he mentioned as being Piter de Vries, mentat in the employ of House Harkonnen, inventor of slow poison that kills if an antidote isn't administered, self-believed 'power behind the Baron' who lusted for Lady Jessica and was first promised that he could make her his sex slave- who specifically ideated the domination of a Bene Gesserit, who was then to be administrator of Arrakis as his prize instead...

I think David Dastmalchian got two or three lines in, the rest landing at Villenueve's feet in the cutting room.

*sigh*

Robert Pattinson?

Rupert Grint?

I can think of a ton of red headed actors who would be perfect if they were like 20-30 years younger.

I thought the SciFi series was decent for the budget but the casting of Paul and Feyd were ass. Especially Paul. Totally unlikeable.

Edit: Charles Dance for emperor!

Ok stupid question but assuming the Landsraad don't discover the emperor helping the Harkonnen, is it "legal" for houses to dispute via war? Like Space News comes out that the Harks killed the Atreides despite the land being granted by the emperor? Wouldn't there be so many questions and lack of trust on future fiefdoms?

went and saw it today, story aspects changed, some characters changed or missing but still thought it was worth it and will see children of dune.
Dug on the ornithopters, looked like giant mechanical dragon flys, almost worth it for just that.

Children of Dune is the third book :nerd

The sequel to this movie should also be called Dune :laughing

I have doubts they will get much further than the first book.

Not sure people will have the patience for it the way they did Lord of the Rings. But I will watch if so.

I think Part 2 will be telling.

Dune isn't exactly creating super high levels of hype regardless if people generally say they liked it.

Wonder what the contract/plans are past Part 2. Not unusual for a movies in the same world to get axed after shitty box office numbers or extended to new projects if numbers were much better thane expected.

It's pretty niche as sci-fi goes. A trilogy, covering the rest of book 1 and then Dune Messiah could work. Beyond that I think there's good material for a series starting with Children of Dune.

One thing that I don't really mind but always notice about the Dune movies, and Villeneueve himself said he "Doesn't want you to see the inside of the spaceships because he wants you to focus on the ecology of dune"..

They don't really ever show any of the massively advanced technology the Fremens use. Like they live in the desert and move around and use knives but their stillsuits...what are they made of? Do the Fremen have labs and clean-rooms?Manufacturing facilities? Apparently you can make spice into lots of things but you never see any tech besides literally what desert dwellers on earth would use.

Why are the Fremen constantly moving between their highly liveable sietches? Water also isn't THAT valueable because they have tons of it stored away...they're not gonna let someone die of dehydration if they need water..

In the books the Sietch have manufacturing and are basically self contained cities. I think it is more a lifestyle choice than they have limited tech.

The water they have stored away is part of the master terraforming plan that Liet Kynes put together for them to transform it from a desert planet to a paradise. I think in the book you can borrow water or take it from the vaults based on how much you have in there but they track it single mindly because the need X amount to terraform and that is the end goal they all work for.

added explanation above.
