It's baaa--aaacckkk! Yep, another round of BARFers galavanting around old Europe, this time in Blighty!! Yep, a reprise of the old English complaint, "They're oversexed, overpaid, and over here!" :banana

No Alps this time. Instead, some Tour de France in England, and the Southern 100 road race on the IOM. Here's what we have in mind:

  • Fly into London
  • Spend a night for jet lag
  • Pick up rental bikes and head north to Yorkshire
  • See a day of the Tour de France through the Yorkshire Dales
  • Head west towards Lancashire and the Lake District for more great riding
  • Head over to the IOM for a couple of days of the Southern 100 road race
  • Back to England for a bit more riding in the Lake District and Dales
  • Turn in the rentals and go home

With that in mind, if you want to do this, here are the things YOU must do, and you must do it QUICKLY because stuff will sell out:

  • Book a flight to LHR arriving no later than July 4, 2014
  • Book a rental bike (see link below)
  • Book an Isle of Man Steam Packet Ferry for the dates and times below (see link below)
  • Booking lodging for night 1 (July 4th) near the rental agency (no recommendation here)
  • Book lodging for the 5th through 7th at the hotel link below
  • Book lodging on the IOM for the 8th and 9th at the hotel linked below
  • Book lodging for the 10th at the link below
  • Return the bike and fly home
  • You can add days on to the end as suits you

Use who you want to book your flight. I've had good luck with Kayak

For the rental, these guys seem like a good choice, and they have a wide choice of bikes. If a few people are coming in at the same time, they'll arrange to pick you up at LHR. Otherwise you'll need to book tube and train to get there. It's actually not that hard. You'll also want to spend a night at a nearby hotel to give yourself a chance to get on top of the jet lag.

For the ferry, you want to go to http://www.steam-packet.com/ and book yourself and your bike a return passage Heysham > Douglas for afternoon sailings on the 8th and 10th. If you have any trouble booking this online, I have the e-mail of the customer service guy there. He took care of everything for me. I can send it to you in a PM.

For lodging, I've found http://www.tripadvisor.com/ is pretty good, but I suppose you could use Kayak too.

For July 5th through 7th, I suggest the Best Western Plus, Milford in Leeds. That's less than 20 miles from where Sue's sister lives, so we'll be convenient. Everything around Yorkshire is filling up because of the TdF, so don't dally.

On July 8th through 9th we are staying at the Edelweiss Guest House in Douglas. If for any reason you can't get in there, just book something on prom in Douglas. We've stayed here before, and it's fine. Good English breakfast is included. It's close to a good pub. Across from the beach, and it has a nice sort of parlor.

On July 10th, we are staying at The Crooklands Hotel. This is close to the ferry from which we'll be disembarking near midnight. It will put us close to the Lake District for the next day.

Sue and I need to be in Oxfordshire on Saturday the 12th to attend the battle proms at Blenheim Palace. That means that we'll need to head back to Knaresborough before heading to Oxfordshire. At this point, you will have reached the 1 week point on your moto rental, so I'm assuming most of you will be heading back south to drop off your moto and to fly home. We can discuss other lodging needs as the thread progresses.

For booking ground transport, the best way I've found is to book trains through the trainline. You can then pick up your tickets at a vending machine when you get to train/tube station at LHR. No hurry on this. You can wait up until the week or so before you head over. The rest of the bookings must be done quickly. The train station you're heading for is Brentwood. Then taxi it to the rental/hire agency.

Don't tell me you're in. Tell me you've booked the ferry and the rental. That's how I'll know you're committed.

Just booked my flight and suggested rooms. I've got doubles for everything if anyone wants to split.

Also...what times are the afternoon ferry? I see outbound at 14:15pm - 17:45pm, but the return ferry is pretty late (19:00 - 23:15)

:w00t! :party

Those are the correct times. The one going back to Heysham gets in quite late. That's why I put us into a hotel 20 miles from the ferry terminal.

It looks like the Brazilians are going to come to this too, so you'll get the chance to ride with them. Always a fun time. :ride

Good news! I received an e-mail from Tony East saying he'll open his A.R.E. museum in Kirkmichael for a private showing for us while we're at the IOM. Tony has a great collection of classic Triumphs, as well as a good selection of Norton Manx and Vincents. He also has the only Greeves street bikes I've ever seen. :party

Anyone else having trouble booking round trip ferry tickets? It won't register the inbound trip when I select it in the journey selector. Weird.

I had problems. I'll pm you the e-mail of the guy who fixed it for me.

Some folks have been asking me about the Southern 100. It runs on a course at the south end of the island, and it's more similar to an Irish roadrace than it is to the TT. Mass start, tight course, shorter laps. A lot of the big names race there - the Dunlops, Guy Martin, et al, but the vibe is supposed to be more like a club race.

Here's the superbike race from 2011.

So what kind of bikes are you guys thinking of renting for this trip. Looks like sportier bikes than the Euro trip I did with ya a few years ago. Interested to see what you all are thinking....

You probably saw George's response on FB. I don't know that Kevin has figured that out yet. The Brazilians will be on their MG Stelvio, and I'll be on my trusty Versys. FWIW, Stuart still rides his Kawi-Strom, but he also has Colin's Battlestar BMW. Dominic, should he join us for a day or so, rides an R1200GS Adventure.

The island will be great on a sportbike, but be aware that a lot of the stuff we'll ride in Yorkshire and the Lakes will be pretty goaty.

thank you Kurt for the insight. :thumbup

Can't be as bad as CA. Lived in England for a while, while the Northern part does not have many freeways, much less potholes than here in CA. :laughing

You might be surprised. We found some great lanes in the Dales that were reasonably challenging, but Hardknott Pass in the Lakes is hands-down, without a doubt, the goatiest paved road I've ever ridden. Goatier than Eureka Canyon, far goatier than Tunitas, or King Ridge, or Salmon Bar, or anything I can think of that I've ever ridden in California, or even the Alps. Come along, I'll show you. :ride

Did you ever hear back about the Ferry tickets? I got an email reply back from the guy at steam packet asking more more info and havent heard anything since. Discovered you can book tickets from other sites, but the 7/10 PM return trip is sold out so I'm returning the next morning.

The guy at steam packet helped me book this:
Tue 8-JUL-14 14:15pm Arr 17:45pm
Thu 10-JUL-14 19:45pm Arr 23:15pm

Haven't decided on the bike yet. I'm tempted to rent a Hyperstrada for this trip (or maybe the f800gs). I'll figure it out in the next few days.

Those are the ones!

The Hyperstrada would be great! :ride

For those riding in the UK for the first time, it's good to be familiar with road signage - particularly for the dreaded GATSO. :mad

UK Road Signage PDF. It starts to get interesting from page 9 or so. Lots of stuff.

In case you're wondering about these places we're going, here's a little tourist board stuff.

First, the Yorkshire Dales:

Followed by some stuff from the Lake District:

Our schedule is jam packed and fun filled, with most of it taken up by riding or race watching, however if you want to add some time on to either end of the rally, you might consider taking a day or two to check out the city of York. York seems much less well-known to most of us than London, but as a scenic attraction, it has much to offer. For instance, the largest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, the very ancient fortifications which go back to Roman times, one of the world's largest train museums, a very walkable medieval city center, and a host of both great pubs and legendary chocolatiers.

Kurt - Well, that's a smart Idea to know the signs. Thank you Kurt for making it easier to be prepared.

George... FYI - I sent an email to the guy about the Ferry and got a message the next day asking for an address and he returned the email the next day with the Ferry invoice for the requested dates....with a discount on the 2 I booked. :thumbup Even has a few days grace period to make the payment.

Since you're staying on the wrong side of the border again this year.....

It's ok, I'm not taking it personally......much :p

If you let me know when you're planning to be there, I might just be tempted to come down and ride both Wrynose and Hardknott passes with you. Lunch in the Woolpack Inn in Boot....?

It's a few years since I last rode those passes. I might add that if any members of your party are planning on extending their vacation either side of the "organised" part, I'd be happy to do my bit by extending Scottish hospitality on the right side of the Border. Having had such great hospitality in CA over the past 15 years, it'd be churlish of me not to offer.... :thumbup
