euthanasia

I have no doubt that you feel this way. it's a character flaw. shows that there is a price attached to your love...

I agree, and disagree with this

Sometimes there is simply a limit on what you can afford. You can't become destitute over an animal. I love my cat s'more than any sane man should, but I understand at some point if an animal is forgone, its time to go. And sometimes the realities of pet care and bank accounts rear their ugly heads, and makes for a hard choice. Not everyone has the ability to pay 6 thousand, like you did. If they can, that's great, but its simply not an option for a great many people.

My mom always said you need to have a set amount you're able to spend before you go to the vet, get that number in your head before you go, ad stick to it

On a related philisophical note, Death is NOT a bad thing, it is the natural culmination of life. How something lived, is more important than how long it lived.

dont worry; the content of Lester's post means little - he will find any way he can to try and make me look bad :rolleyes

lester; your mom is a character flaw :laughing

A pet owner has to do whats best for the animal, the decision should not be based on a few hundred bucks. It should be based on what is best for the animal.

It's irresponsible to take on the responsibility of owning a dog or a cat if you cant' afford to take care of it.

if you live on a limited budget and a few thousand dollar hit may bankrupt you, maybe consider pet insurance. It covers most catastrophic occurrences and it's only about 30-35 bucks a month. small price to pay for a member of the family.

If you can't swing that much maybe your not in a position in your life where you can responsibly own a dog or a cat, etc.

I never said a few hundred bucks.

I think the ideal world youre putting out there is admirable but not always realistic. Animals live a long time, and financial realities can change drastically over a decade or more.

Care for animals now is approaching the same issue hiking have, that life can be prolonged long after quality of life has degraded. And everyone has a different idea of what that means. You said your cat can't hear, can't see, and can't walk well. I would say its long past time to put that cat down. What's best for an animal is not th enegation of the very things that make it what it is. That's your decision, but in MY world outlook, that's not something I could morally justify

my cats are fine. :lol

you should probably try to read and then digest what i wrote before you expound. you're missing a whole lot of what i said.

BTW, the reference to the few hundred bucks was from the price that Charlie put on the head of his pets.

it wasn't about money for me- if i could have given the little fucker another ten perfect years, i would have ate up my savings account doing it but probably could have only kept him alive for another few weeks living like shit.

What was your little tiger's name?

Kitteh went out on top as he should.

This isn't the time or place to exchange insults. Euthanasia is a personal and difficult choice, regardless of the economics driving it.

OP, I'm truly sorry for your loss. Letting one of the fuzzballs go to that mousing ground in the sky is always difficult, and taking the euthanasia route certainly doesn't make it easier.

so i'm faced with putting one of my cats down or trying to treat him for lymphoma. if there's one thing anybody with any humanity hates it's to see a pet suffer, so i'm probably going to euthanize him. shitty thing is he's only 10 and was a super active cat until a few weeks ago, but i really can't see the point of him suffering through chemo and he's already getting skinny and uncomfortable and would rather not see him just waste away. i guess that's the proper time to euthanize- before they are an emaciated mess.

I had it done at home- vet came over and put my cat down while he slept on my lap.

Best money I have ever spent.

Assmod, you did the right thing, as hard as it is. When it's my time, I'd much rather go with my best friend giving me that proverbial scratch behind the ear telling me that it's all going to be ok.
Ironic we have more humane end of life care for our pets than we do for ourselves.

red, aka mr. biscuits...little fucker was so nice it was actually kind of nauseating. you could pretty much hang him upside down from his hind legs and he'd just keep purring. i think he actually might have been a dog trapped in a feline body.

this

although pet care is getting so good, that its starting to resemble human care, and the same issues of quality vs quantity are coming up

The Bossdog has a ginger cat he calls his own. :)

It's a tough choice, how fortunate for your kitty that he had you to look out after his well being.

sorry to hear about your pet ,had to put my dog asleep couple of mths ago lung cancer, walked out of the vets crying like a baby..
