I have flex transponder on my bike with registered plate on my account.

I am getting charged , time to time, for riding on 580 in "paid" lanes. Every time it cant read transponder I get charged. Transponder mounted on the windshield. In position 3+.
I never used transponder on my bike, started for the first time two months ago.
Sometimes it cant even read license plate correctly and sends me additional fine for 25$.
WTF?
I filed complaints and disputes with Fastrack. Anybody else gets this nonsense?
Dont they see already that this is motorcycle? Motorcycle has motorcycle plate?

The only reason I installed transponder because fastrack website says I need one for the flex lanes. I guess I pull it off.

Is your Moto plate personalized?

I ride the lanes a lot without a transponder and never get charged

i've never seen this before, that's pretty strange...

did you ever date a caltrans employee :laughing

I think the issue is using the transponder, because then they want to use the transponder reading value (1-3) for determining if HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) or not. Stop using the transponder, leave your M/C plate registered to your Fastrak account, and see if they continue charging you.

I ride the 580 HOV toll lanes in Tri-Valley every day and never get charged, no transponder.

https://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-hy-motorcycles-in-carpool-lanes-20140922-story.html

"Motorcycles are allowed in the HOV lanes," said Sgt. Terry Liu, express lane supervisor for the CHP in Los Angeles County.

They are not required to have any "clean air vehicle" stickers or to be carrying passengers, and there is no stipulation on what time of day or night they use the lanes.

What about the old HOV lanes, converted to FasTrak lanes, such as the ones on the Harbor Freeway south of downtown Los Angeles?

Automobile drivers using those lanes are required to have a registered transponder, for which they pay a monthly fee, and to pay the posted rate -- which rises and falls with the increasing or decreasing density of traffic on the highway -- when they do.

Not motorcycles.

"Motorcycles are allowed in the FasTrak lanes," Liu said. "And, no, they are not required to have a transponder."

There is, however, Liu said, "one caveat."

While the cameras that monitor FasTrak lane usage are able to distinguish between car license plates and motorcycle license plates, they don't always recognize a personalized motorcycle license plate.

So, if you have one of those, Liu said, you run the risk of the FasTrak cameras thinking you're a car, thinking you're supposed to have a transponder, and sending you a ticket in the mail.

Twice now, I've received tickets from Fastrack for my KTM, when I live down here in Santa Maria, I've never ridden my bike in the Bay Area. They send a picture os some fat fuck, different license plate and a completely different type of bike.

So, does that mean even with these fastrak toll lanes popping up, motorbikes can access it anytime without needing a transponder or paying a fee?

I've never used a transponder on my bike, and have never been pinged for the fastrak express lanes.

+1 Never used a transponder on my bike or car (except when going through Livermore to get out of the Bay Area on a Friday) to cross any bridges. All my plates are registered online, end of story.

In a car, to take advantage of the express lanes, having either a clean-air vehicle decal or qualifying as HOV, you need the transponder with the switch flipped. If you go through the express lane without that, you will get charged per the usual rate, even if you qualify for the free. I've experienced this first-hand, getting charged for driving a car with stickers in the express lane. However, the system is smart enough to know that Motos always get in free, so you don't need a transponder (unless you have personalized plates, per a post above).
