first bike

Your best bet is to get with a girl that rides better than you, sweet talk her, and have her convince you that buying her a new bike and letting you take her old one is a good deal. I'm still trying to figure out the math on how that's a good deal. I probably forgot to carrry a 1 somewhere...

...is that where the decimal point is supposed to be?

well.....you have alot of options to choose from for a cheap bike. I am a beginner too an the first bike I was turned loose on was a 1992 Honda F2 its a 600 cc still alive.
Its cheap an reliable.........hell it worked for me. Go with what feels good take your time, you willl find a bike

I was gonna get a 250 or 500 for my first bike but everyone seemed to tell me to get a 600 cuz I'll want more power after awhile. Depending on you, I say start with a 600.

the last bike i bought was a new ninja 250. i wrecked it and was only out a few. now a few years later i plan on getting the same thing. (like this years colors better). as i recall it got me from point a to b very well. and only once did i actually recall finding its place of power loss in the rpm band. so why i would need more power for the first 6 months our more is beyond me. i hope to keep this one longer then the last.

Yeah... A Ninja 250 is a good start. It wont rip a hole in your pocket and it's awesome to ride. I push mine to the max often because I want more power, but she's good for now. She's teaching me the basics.

VTR250s are also a fun bike to ride. I love mine. The plastics are cheap, and the parts are readily available. You can find them for $1000, and they go forever. Mine has almost 60,000 miles on it, and it's going strong. Ugly, but strong.

You might want to also look at cx500s. they're great first bikes.

99 Buell on Craigslist with a salvage title. Might get it for $3k. Really nice bike. Good deal and a 17 year old can't afford the insurance for full coverage anyway. That is the only down side to 'salvaged title' or 'rebuilt title'. I own a 2000 Buell with a salvage title. Great bike. Just don't ride like you have something to prove and you'll live long enough to be real happy with it. k

Take the class first if you haven't. Then you know better about the riding. I bought my bike before the class, I guess I got lucky, it's been fun so far.

Anyway, welcome. :)

1st bike

My advice would be to start with a 600cc. If you've never ridden before, start slow. Don't be like some people and go straight to a 1000cc and then have more bike than you can handle. Good luck

i got my first bike back in october of last year and before then i had never riden but have always wanted to...so being the cool guy that i am i bought a 1000cc 88 hurricane haha i couldnt even ride it home i had the seller drop it off for me but as soon as he left i jumped on it and took it around the block a few times and i just got used to it real quick... i only paid 1000 for it but reciently sold it for 1500...talk about a come up... yea but anyways just start on whatever size bike you think you can handel... whatever you do be safe about it take a motorcycle saftey class and practice on their bikes....

Another thing why it's not a bad idea to buy a used 'smaller' bike to learn.

You use it in the beginning to learn anyway... it's better you get something you're not that afraid to drop because it doesn't cost you an arm and a leg literally.

Then in a few months if you feel you're ready for a different bike, you can sell it without losing much of the value... or maybe get the money back. :)

my first bike is a '68 Honda CB350
And I've yet to ride it
though Ive had it since last November
.....yeah...long story.....

you are definately better off with a small bike 250cc-500cc that you can pay off and then when it comes to insurance only paying for liability. I know that an 18 year old male in California buying a new 600cc bike and trying to finace it, even with a clean record, is looking at upwards of $3000/ year in insurace alone.

My first bike was a 1986 Yamaha SRX 250 ($500 ins. auction) and I rode the piss out of it. Since I was in college, it was my only transportation so I put on 20000 miles in a year. I also crashed it three times but the only damage incurred on the bike were some scrapes and one broken lever. After that I had a Kawi EX500 ($500 theft recovery) and after that a Kawi Ninja 250 ($900) that I got from the track I rode that for years and raced it from time to time. None of these bikes had full coverage on them and when they went down the damage to the bike was minimal. Most of the damage that occurred was the damage to me. I was too young and stoooooopid to realize that there is a very good reason these guys on the Sunday ride have Full leathers and/or Aerostich with armor. I had to learn the hard way, I hope you don't have to also.:mstingray :newbie :banana :Port

I just got my first bike also, got a 2001 929rr. So far so good! Put about 3k on it in 2 months! I commute alot. Any tips? Suggestions?

I just got my motorcycle like a year ago its a sard GSXR750. Super easy to learn on but i bought it salvage so i dont care if i drop it. Also Bikes that are newer are some what easier to ride. I learned on a old f2 and hated how it felt. Also look during during the season where most people are going to sell the motorcycle. Hope that helps

Start off with a good used bike under 600cc. naked bike. Spend more of you hard earn money on safety equipement. That's more important.

Thanks for all the great advice and welcomes. Hopefully I'll be able to start riding soon!

Any advice on pros/cons of salvage title? i'll start a separate thread for this too.

thanks.
