Saw this $180 mig welder at Home Depot on sale for for $80. Someone special ordered it and never picked it up.

How capable of a welder is this? Box says it can weld up to a 3/16 piece of steel.

i'd return it. you can find a used, better, MIG on craigslist for about 300 and it might come with the bottle and some accessories if you're patient

IF it can be converted to run MIG (gas control solenoid) i'd consider keeping it. check to make sure parts are even available though

flux core certainly has it's place though. if all you need is an occasional ferrous fusion moment it'll probably do you just fine

It's not very good. Flux core means it won't do too well on thin stuff, and any 110 welder is really going to be pushing it on 3/16 - it might do reasonably around 1/8" but 1/16" will be difficult and it won't penetrate well enough for me to trust it on 3/16".

My dad has 220v mig with oxygen tank I can always use.

I thought for $80 it was a good deal. Ill wait a bit before opening it. Not sure oxygen can be hooked up. I don't need a welder and wasn't planning on spending that much. Really prefer to spend the money a nice 2 1/2 or 3hp router for table and plunge work.

Anything that says 'Professional,' or 'Pro-Series,' on the box and then says it again on the actual item, without ever mentioning a brand name has to be good :thumbup

Someone should make a 'Professional Series Condom.' Maybe a guy hammering away with a jackhammer and hardhat could be the logo

Dubbs really? Really? I hope you are trolling with this one.

Never trolled and never plan to. :x I've only used my dad rolling wire feed with gas and dont know much about welding.

For $80 this isnt a deal? Regularly $180. For welding nuts to fixtures. making custom metal brackets?

Only negative I think is its flux core and I dont think it can accept an oxygen bottle.

Buffalo Tools makes it. MMig125 is the model.

dubblingtons, why do you research and obsess about everything else then impulse this?

fluxcore is the ninja 250 of welding, except for the part where people say "i wish i'd never sold my 250 because i never needed anything more"

I only bought it cuz it was a deal and I just returned $30 worth of stuff and got a store credit and saw it marked down. I figured I'd get it and then do my research....ask BARF and look up online...and then decide of its worth keeping.

But...
But....
But, it says it "Welds All Types of Carbon Steel"....

:|

Seriously guys....I'm not a welding expert, thats why I asked.

So to summarize it's not worth the $180 regular price let alone the $80 fire sale?

I did read that flux core no gas welders require more clean up and arent as clean.

also, mig doesn't use oxygen. just get a 220v service in your garage and go

"dad, can i just bring the welder to my house i have a long-ish project and i'll need it for a week"

then don't return it.

If you can ditch the flux core for real wire and hook up inert gas to it, (usually an Argon/Carbon Dioxide mix), it's enough welder to tack together various little things. Depending on how fine the adjustment is and what you are doing, that could be enough.

Or, as a first small rig to tack shit in place easily... Sure. If you can gas it. Nobody likes gassing over flux.

Would be good for welding headers... If you can gas it.

Throw it on CL.

Super cool welder for sale. Got this NIB beauty in partial payment for a crack deal and have no use for it. $70.

..works every time..

Nick and I got a Lincoln flux core welder on craigslist for really cheap. It's like a metal hot glue gun and has come in handy on a many occasions! Would I trust it to hold up on something integral to my well being? Maybe

But the look on our neighbors face when we welded all but his rear passenger door shut on his beat up commuter car shut... Well worth it

I don't see how you can consider it a good deal if you don't need it in the first place :dunno

That cracked me up. Is it a demolition derby car now?

If you're just stitching some holes up where trim on a car fender used to be, if you are just sticking some stuff together to come back later and use a real welder to finish it, it'll work. If you've got a little tiny hole in a dirt bike pipe, it'll fill it. Depends. A good welder (person) can make one work.
