Front wheel drive vs all wheel

When I was stationed in Alaska, the majority of vehicles on the road, that weren't pickups, were FWD sedans. They do just fine in the snow.

Unless you're performance driving, no.

Steve

Even then, it's only good in the rain/ inclement weather. Otherwise, the guys spin out all over the track...

Difference between fwd and 4wd? Probably about 20 feet ;)

No. Maybe in HEAVY rain it might make a SLIGHT difference. But not worth the extra moving parts' maintenance and lesser gas mileage.

But off-road and snow is fun!

Subaru owner.

When I lived a couple miles up a very muddy road in the mountains of Big Sur, I had a jeep, a power wagon (Dodge 4WD/V8), and a VW rear engine station wagon. Guess which one always got me home. The VW with two hundred pounds of stuff in the back. I also drove that over Teton Pass in a snowstorm with three to four feet of fresh snow, the only car that made it over that night. I had my windshield wipers on to knock the snow off that was coming over the hood. The front tires were probably several inches off the ground and acted as rudders.

Front wheel drive is great for cities.

I think Ernie is saying we should all drive our front drive shitboxes backwards unless the roads are dry.

Did you ever push that RL you had hard through a turn? Without the torque vectoring that the rear diff does in that car, it would be like a typical Honda sedan that understeers very early.

Just read a comaro between the new SS Camero and Porsche Turbo S and Nissan GTR. Two AWD vs rwd camero. Track lap times all the same, 1/4 mi years apart. So, if you want a stop light winner, go awd.

BTW, new Camero ss has 305 wide tires all the way around!!:wow Corvette people be careful who you race...

Edit - I do realize that fwd is not mentioned here, but it just shows that awd is superior for some things

Meanwhile, the Honda Civic and its front-wheel drive are ranked #1 in California. :laughing

http://www.insidercarnews.com/honda-civic-ranks-first-in-california/

During 2013, the Honda Civic was purchased by more retail customers in California than any other car model, according to Honda’s analysis of Polk vehicle registration data that was recently released. A total of 65,910 Civics were purchased in the Golden State. No other vehicle sold as many units, when not accounting for commercial fleet or government sales. The victory is a huge one for Honda since the California automotive market is the single largest in the entire United States.

Unless your driving in snow which I don't is getting an AWD vehicle worth it?

What is "worth it" is Your call...At least I have no idea about your financial situation.
All wheel drive is very stabilizing on wet roads..and who says you won't get into some snow,
when the weather is "low snow".
