Does anyone know if the U-pol #1 Clear coat is fuel resistance? I can't seem to find the answer online anywhere. I'm doing a rattle can paint job on the tank and want to at least protect it from gas spillage. My other option is the Spraymax 2k urethane, but it looks like that they are only available online, unless someone know a local shop that has them.

my old race fairings were cleared w/ U-POL #1. 2 1/2 years of trackdays and racing, im sure i spilled some fuel on the tank. tank is white and the clear still looks normal.

def let it cure for a few days at least before getting gas on it.

Glad to hear that. Do you remember where you got the U-Pol from? I thought I read it somewhere in this forum that you can find it at Lowe's. I searched their website and it doesn't show up.

if it comes from a can its never going to be gas proof, I had "okay" results with the rustolium crystal clear epoxy coat.

but you can always paint it and then let it cure for a few days
bring it to a body show and give the painter 30$ to hit it with a real clear coat...

you need NEED a proper 2 part clear if you want it to stand up to gasoline.

you can also "TRY" to call some paint shops... some can custom mix 2 part paints, maybe you can find one that does clear?

keep in mind those cans have like a 3 day shelf life... and only the first 36 hours are really good.

I've been reasearching and the Spraymax 2k is a two-part aerosol. It has a 24 hours shelf-life once it is activiated. I'm going to visit various hardware and paint shops today before getting it online. I'll keep you all posted if anyone local sells them.

notice the quart of 2K clear and the Preval aerosol w/ a jar under it on the left. mix, put in jar, spray away. all in all, cheaper than Spraymax and about the same price as 3 cans of U-POL #1. the tip on the Preval isnt great, but its not anything that some buffing cant fix.

...

thats cuz u bought Rustoleum, U-POL #1 is MUCH better.

either way, if it comes out of a can 99% its a single part paint that is full of solvents, gas will soften it up again.

even if you use the best stuff like upul its going to start to wrinkle around the filler cap. takes a while but it happens.

thats why you need a proper 2 part.

Almost any paint shop should carry that , but call first. PN# 3680061
First hand knowledge is that it works and three good coats would work best.
1 can will give you 1 pass over a Toyota 4Runner hood. So if you are doing
track plastics and don't really care then 1 is enough.

Hey all. I found Napa in Redwood City can order it for $25 a can. It didn't take long for me to spill gas into the tank after I clearcoated it. Doh. The good news is the Spraymax 2k does work :)
