So, this is a long story about stupidity that I'll try and keep short (but should be entertaining for you, which is why I'll include the build up - skip down a few paragraphs if you want). I had a leak in the rear tire of my '92 FZR 600 so I decided to replace it, but because there was plenty of rubber left on the tire, I figured I'd lose a bit of it practicing control with a locked rear wheel. My friend and I head over to a deserted section of road one night and were doing fine skidding to 20-30' stops. Then my buddy thought he'd try a 180 (after getting the bike a little sideways inadvertently). He went a little fast, let off the brake and highsided (grrr... squidding broke my bike
). Broken parts: right side mirror, turn signal, upper and lower fairings, minor bent bits, and starter motor cover (whoops there goes all the oil in the engine).
We trailer the bike back to my place, get the replacement parts and begin the install (last night). Everything goes fairly well except there's some funky wiring problem with the turn signal. While messing with that, we kill the battery and need to jump it with the cage. So, while we're letting the engine run to juice the battery back up, we leave the bike alone for too long and it overheats - spewing radiator fluid all over my garage. Argh!
PROBLEM: Ok, so the problem is, I went a mile to the gas station today and noticed my bike was overheating. I'd refilled the radiator with fluid so didn't know what was up. Well, when the bike was spewing fluid and the exhaust under the bike was really hot, it melted my front fairings so they now touch the exhaust pipes a little bit. Is this what's causing the overheating or is there something else I did? What's the best way to get new fairings? The dealer quotes me $266 per side. Should I just prowl ebay until I find what I need? How much would it cost to get the wrong years fairings repainted? How would I go about finding fairings at the thousands of junkyards around the bay area? Anyone have some old fairings that they've replaced (but aren't melted out of shape?). Anything else I need to check/look into? Thanks!
