My helmet was stolen recently and I need a new one. I've been interested in mod helmets for a while but I've never used one before. So far I've narrowed my search down to two that both seem to fit my requirements and price range (less than $500):

Simpson Mod Bandit - Revzilla
HJC RPHA 90S - Revzilla

Can anyone who owns either of these helmets weigh in on the pros & cons of each?

Right now I'm leaning toward the Simpson, because it appears to have slightly better range of vision.

Comments recommending other models are welcome!

The dropdown visor on the RPHA 90 doesn't lock down, so it bounces up when you go over a bump.

I haven't used either, but can recommend the Scorpion AT-950X.

You had me at Simpson Bandit... as for this "modular" gizmo, I can't say.

Are modular tested in the same manner as full face helmets? Do they take an impact to the chin bar?

Good question (not asked by OP)... Still, a good question

In the last 5 years, three guys I know who went down wearing modulars received concussions. Hmmm. This didn't seem to happen with guys wearing full face prior to the "modular revolution) :laughing

Is it because we were younger then, or they are testing for concussions more now, or...... ??

I haven’t check lately but 18 months ago when I purchased my helmet.

None of the modular helmets had a Snell rating, DOT only.
Snell Strikes the chin bar and none of the manufactures submit for testing.
Also none of the helmets with internal sun visors had a Snell rating.

I bought A Shoei with the internal drop down visor, “no snell rating”.
Bottom line DOT or Snell the best helmet is the one you will wear and fits.

SHARP does test modulars for whether or not they open during an impact. Since it's not US-based, some models either don't exist or go under a different name so you'll have to do some research.

I've been riding with a GT Air, which has the internal drop down visor.

As cool and useful as it was initially, at this point I've just gone back to wearing sunglasses and don't bother with the internal visor. It's a PITA to clean, fogs up when my sunglasses don't, etc.

It's getting to be about time for a new helmet, this one's approaching 5 years old, and I think the next one is going to be a custom fitted carbon fiber one. I was considering modular but I also want the stricter safety testing as I've had more than enough concussions already in my life.

My view on modular helmets is that I want fullface protection and modulars generally don't protect as well as a full face. There may be exceptions.

My next helmet, I want to try some of the new technology in the inner liner, like 6D's helmets. Unfortunately, 6D is not shaped correctly to fit my head.

I have a suomy modular helmet it’s an ok helmet I took the drop down shade out of it was useless anyway, helmet is pretty heavy, plenty of cheek padding top of your head padding
There’s not much there, have a couple of full face helmets as well I just change around

I know plenty of people who have had concussions while wearing standard full face helmets made by top-tier brands like Shoes and Arai. The question is: do you know anyone who had their face scraped off because the clasp on their modular helmet failed?

Nope.

I think you're missing the point of having a chin bar capable of absorbing an impact. If you read the studies about helmet impacts a little over a third of crashes involve face planting the chin bar into the ground. Not having a chin bar that can absorb that kind of an impact leaves your face and chin exposed to impact injuries. Most modulars don't have a chin bar that can absorb much of an impact because they're too thin and flexible and then a lot of modules have cheap plastic hinges and latches that if you punch it with your hand will pop open so I can't imagine it would hold up very well in an actual crash.
But that's me you can choose to do whatever you wish. The frustrating thing to me as a motorcycle instructor is that I get a lot of people in my class that bought modulars because the salesperson told them it was a full face helmet and they didn't realize that it didn't offer the same amount of protection as a full face helmet because they're just not an informed consumer yet. Luckily they learn in the class that a modular is not the same as a full face helmet.

One reason I'm looking at mod and not full face is that I like to wear ear plugs but my previous helmet would always yank the plugs out of my ears as I put it on. My hope with a mod helmet is that I would be able to avoid this thanks to the larger opening. Does anyone else have this problem?

I don't think earplugs are supposed to stick out far enough to be impacted by helmet removal.

Properly inserted ear plugs should not stick out.
Lots of info on how to insert ear plugs. google is your friend.

You will likely find it cheaper to purchase new ear plugs rather than a new helmet :).

I use these guys and find that the work well. They use acoustic filters to preferentially eliminate the wind and engine noise while still allowing me to listen to my podcasts.
