Who has ridden it on a bike? And what was your top speed?

I was watching the construction of the Autobahn on national geographic the other night, and all I have to say is what a bunch of lucky fookers.

Back in 1996-1997 I lived/worked in Europe and occasionally rode my CBR600F2 on the German autobahn.

My top speed was maybe 130mph. Even at that speed you gotta check your 6 just in case people are on your tail and want to pass. And yes there are people who sometimes want to pass at those speeds. Road manners are much more strictly enforced in Europe. If you're not passing then you stay the fook out of the fast lane. The cops will bust you for lallygagging in the fast lane. US drivers could learn a lot from Euro drivers.

First time i was ever on a bike was on the Autobahn. I was riding bitch on a GSXR owned by my exchange host. 260km/h, whatever that works out to.

155 in a DIESEL MB!

I'm all for European type driving certification here in the States. I think it would make it safer for motorcyclists :thumbup

Anyone know just how thick the road surfaces are for the Autobahn?
Roadbed and surface measuring about 68 cm (27 inches) in thickness. (link)
Makes US roads look like goat-trails...

I hear our local Hwy 280 was designed by German autobahn engineers, anyone know more about this?

Heard the same regarding I-5, but the right lane in places sure show signs of being pounded by trucks.

As I recall from a documentary I watched it was built that way to support the weight of military tanks and other vehicles if need be.

The Nazi's made thick highways and the trains ran on time. :laughing

And for some silly reason the other half of the world fought back and insisted on defeating the Fuhrer.. We could've had a US autobahn, concentration camps, and hmm.. the autobahn again.

an indicated 115mph in a rented renault diesel commuter thing.
The best part is when another twenty horsepower renault passes you doing 120 with a family of 5 inside, two kmart bikes on the back and one of those roof rack packs on top.

I couldnt get mine past 115 though.

You didn't use the draft, man! I've never ridden on the autobahn, but I've driven on it quite a bit, and in a diesel rental you've got to use the draft! :teeth

As supertireguy said, 130 is not enough to bring to the party in the left lane. In a rental with a 200kph top speed, you have to carefully gauge your passes by looking both way ahead and way behind. Those big Merc's come up in a hurry! Lots to think about when jetlagged. :laughing

As a note, there is much less unrestricted autobahn than there used to be. In many areas there are speed limits and speed cameras and unmarked polizei cars. However, there is some great, wide unrestricted areas south of Frankfurt where speeds really pick up. Also, DO NOT pass on the right (except, I think, if traffic is moving less than 70kph).

seems someone needs to catch up on their intarweb history :nerd

It wasn't that the speedometer the indicated 205 right? it was the cop in the air calculating 205.

:cry The two years I was stationed in Grafenwoehr, the only vehicle I had access to (mostly to go to autopsies in Nuerenburg) was a Suzuki Samurai. If I was lucky, I could push the thing to 100 km/hr, going downhill...with a tailwind. :( I remember the first time I thought I could pass a slower vehicle...and almost got flattened by someone in a Mercedes going a LOT faster. :laughing

Honestly, though I'd love a chance to drive it again with a better vehicle, I'm not sure I'd wanna get out there on a bike.

I totally look forward to riding the autobahn and the nordschleife soon. in germany, it's not terribly difficult to rent a BMW r1200s.
