Stuck in gear, shift lever feels free, clutch does not disengage. Any idea?

A friend called and said his GW was stuck in 1st. He just rode it and parked for a few mins, and found it stuck.

The shifter moves fully both ways, but there does not seem to be any gear moving sensations, it's just like a smooth spring loaded lever.

It gets worse.

When you pull the clutch, it's still locked in gear! We tried rocking the bike while hitting the shifter and discovered that the bike can still roll, if you overcome the engine, so at least is seems the gearbox is not locked.

Any ideas?

And where would be a good place for this kind of service? I think he had it towed to GP sports.

Ug, 2006. GPS navi model I think...

Oh, now he said it unlocked during the tow. I don't know anything about wings but wondered if there wasn't something obvious and stupid, like an anti-theft feature that locks it in gear...

Damn, he just told me he rode it home to SF from SSJ, no problems.

He thinks maybe the starter was stuck engaged.

But I asked him about the shifter being so smooth and he once said the shifter is hydraulic. Never heard of that.

Wingnut...k

That would be ideal, but that report sounds like the clutch would be stuck disengaged, or freewheeling. Also, why would the shifter not shift any gears?

Shouldn't the shifter be able to work through the gears? I know you'd have to rock/roll to get through all gears, but it was like a dead stick.

Anyway, I'll tell him to do both clutch and brake systems.

Yeah, that's weird. Would have to see in person. Only thing I can think of is that the clutch was still disengaged or slightly engaged therefore not allowing the shift lever to move gears. Sometimes you can get air in the clutch line and will need to bleed it (hydraulic applications).

It is summertime, depending on where one rides, heat can quickly affect fluids if it's not maintained. Good luck to your friend

When was the last time your friend changed ALL the fluids in his bike?

Never. He just bought it from Mach1 last season and has only ridden it a few times.

I know this is nearly a worthless point, but it's low miles like 32k.

There only thing I know about that bike is that the engine/trans/shaft drive assy is in one big case that the bikes seems to be built around. A coworker had one, and it started to whine. He sold it as just getting the engine out is like a 10 hour job. He should flush the hydraulic clutch and pray.

maybe a bubble in the clutch slave that worked its way up and into the reservoir at the bar during transport?

32k miles is considered low to skip maintenance? He better have a tow truck on speed dial for all his vehicles...

No, it's low miles to consider buying for a used GW, I think. I know that means it's been sitting a lot, which is not much better than having tons of miles. It looks good on paper though.

Anyway, I gather that most people, who are not wrenches, the casual type that would be interested in a GW type of MC, or any for that matter, would not really much consider changing the clutch fluid or flushing brake lines on a low miles, newly purchased bike from a dealer that said they did a basic service and inspection.

But some of you's know better :thumbup

Flushing fluids is more about age not mileage. 12 year old bike, might have the same clutch and blinker fluids for a decade.
