Gone in 24 seconds....

Wow. so that's how it happens eh....with a mini van no less. How miserable.

Question : in looking at stolen bikes on the Barf Theft reports, it seems like mostly newer bikes (04-07) are being taken. Are older bikes (like my 01) still profitable to steal, or do you think they're mostly left alone?

I can't figure out the habits of these thieves because I see really nice bikes that sit out all night every night in secluded areas, but then I know peops who are really careful that have gotten jacked.

I do know that aftermarket parts are the quickest way to make your bike a target though, but I couldn't tell whether the bike in the vid had any.

I'm pretty sure my bike got jacked like that in broad daylight right downtown sf, in the financial district. I had a disk lock on it. Although they caught the guy.

So if you ever meet a mr. freddie dalton, he is a bike thief and you can ask him how he does it.

Any bike is a candidate for being stolen. If it runs and has usable parts, it can be sold for cash. They aren't being stolen for a museum, they are being stripped to the frame, and the parts sold on ebay and craigslist.

Mods aren't a consideration either. That just increases the number of theives who target your bike. The normal thief wants to sell off the parts, because the bike is worth more that way then whole. If you have gold plated bling on your bike, then the guy who lives around the corner from you wants to add your bling to his bike. It's easier to take the whole bike, then to take the parts off the bike. Those are the bikes that are recovered from behind a building, less the good stuff.

That's the quickest way to screwup your vertebrae for life, dragging a 400 pound bike into a mini van.Dumb ass scum sucking morons.

The video isn't viewable, and I'm pretty sure this is a repost.

it's a repost anyways

I haven't read all this thread so pardon me if I'm repeating what someone else has already said.

This is obviously a set-up, staged for some bizarre purpose that escapes me completely.

All the huffing and puffing really counts for nothing when you look beyond the outrage the poster wants us to feel and look at the facts.

NO thief worth his salt is going to sit, double-parked, on a busy street, in a conspicuous van, in full view of passers-by and possible CCTV cameras for OVER A MINUTE before deciding to jump out and heist a bike off the street.

This is SO obviously a practical joke of some sort, I'm amazed that people have been taken in by it.

If it wasn't for the fact that it's not the 1st of April, I'd give that as the explanation.

I dont know man...Im not an LEO, but I work security and deal with theft on a daily bassis...Ive come to realize there are two kinds of theives...dumb ones and smart ones.

Id say most 90% are dumb ones....this is probably one of them.

Honestly...if you were walking down a busyt street like that, would you think that was going to happen?

I would see a busy street, with a mom-mobile double parked, and up until the last few seconds...it was not parked right next to the bike...just one of those situation were "people hear the car alarm going off but just dont care to pay mind". If there was anyone that noticed the van...I doubt they realized why it was parked there

the coments on from the utube video were funny.

The guy who posted the orginal video said they never did catch the theives even though the theft was caught on tape.
