Good choice for first handgun?

I could be wrong, but I would think that given the nature of CA politics, if you bust out an illegal CCW you'd probably be treated as the bad guy in most situations. Which means a lot of charges other than for the concealed weapon.

if I am ever in a situation that involves me needing to "bust out" a gun the legal ramifications are going to be the last thing I am worried about.

meh, it's just a misdemeanor

First offense is "usually" prosecuted as a misdemeanor if there are no extenuating circumstances, but can be trumped up to felony with a little work if the DA wants to make a name/case for himself. 2nd time is a felony. Period.

True enough and without resorting to cliches, I feel the same way.

You just seemed to be implying that the loss of a $100 throw-away gun and a misdemeanor would be all you faced.

It is the definition of "extenuating circumstances" in the minds of many that concerns me. Too often you hear idiotic breathless media accounts of finding guns and "hundreds of rounds of ammunition" when the SHTF for unrelated reasons in someone's house, etc..

If handguns were motorcycles, the Ruger GP 100 would be a KLR 650 or a BMW R1200GS. Unappealing to most, but the people who like them are fanatical.

My very first handgun purchased when they first came out along with the P90 back in '85 or so.

It got stolen before too long. Wish I had it back. My current S&W mag. doesn't leave me wanting enough to purchase another unless a good deal came through on a used one.

I'll tell you what would be nice for home defense. An AK with a 30 round mag, red dot, and a folding stock.

Of course, guess whether you can buy such a thing in CA.

It you feel a need for a semi auto carbine look no farther than Rugers potent Mini 14 chambered in .223. With the rifle at the shoulder the stock carbine barrel presents only an inch or two longer that a standard full sized hand gun at arms reach.

You don't need a 30 round mag. or a red dot/laser/flashlight/etc.

Short burst fire control is all you need and those accessory's are all BS that gives an intruder a target to shoot at.

fully Ca. compliant.

I agree, but then again, CA is a state with no castle doctrine. State FAIL.

Not really. Kalifornia laws as close to castle doctrine as we can dream while living in this liberal place. At least we don't have "duty to retreat".:nerd

How is that any better than M4 though?

I didn't claim it was better, Just easier to acquire and super fun to shoot and in it's stock form there is no Ca. compliancy hurdles to jump. The version you posted with the ATI/Tapco style stock is NOT compliant as it has both a pistol grip and a removable magazine.

Hang around any gun forum for long and folks will eventually try to compare the Mini 14 with an AR platform but aside from using the same round (mostly) and being semi auto rifles they are quite different. I own both and honestly the classic solid feel of the Garand action is just, well, funner to shoot. For customization and tweaking I don't think the AR can be beat. I'm glad to be fortunate enough to have both and I intend to get a few more of each at some point down the line as well

There is no duty to retreat when a person is assaulted in a place where he or she has a right to be.

Personally I use a pump action for home defense, simply because my HK91 and Glock 20 would not only shoot through my walls, but most likely my neighbors.:teeth but I live in a place where I need bear defense more than personal defense.

Funny how gun ownership, and concealed carry laws without a CCW permit deters crime. Who would have thought.

I'm looking to get my first pistol as well actually, for range shooting and home defense.

Thinking revolver, budget is around $500 (not including ammo/accessories). I want something that's not too big/heavy, durable and accurate for range shooting, and looks cool (I'm vain like that). An all-black revolver would be ideal, none of that cowboy shit, lol. :p

I'm mostly considering S&W and Ruger.

Also, what are my odds of getting a CCW permit in Oakland? Not good?

For home defense, my personal choice is a revolver (Model 85 ultralight .38 special) Revolvers are just more simple, and more reliable, IMO. And when you need a gun for home defense, you need one RIGHT NOW.

For range work, you can't beat a 1911, but good luck finding one for $500.00, if you do tell me where I can get one.

Your chances of getting a CCW in Oakland ... LOL ... you would literally have a better chance of a monkey flying out of your ass and handing you a winning lottery ticket.
