H.O.R.S.E. Rules clarification

I play horse (we call it 4 letter, 5 letter whatever so we don't stand around all night coming up with a word) almost every night after work with the people on my block.

Here are the rock solid rules:

1. Call your shot. If you don't do exactly what you called it doesn't count. This goes for one handed, one foot, backboard, swish, you name it.

2. If you don't call a shot and you make it, it's location only, period.

3. If you miss everything on a shot wether you're doing a follow up shot, or trying to make a new one (backboard, net, hoop, poll to the ground doesn't count) then you get a letter.

4. If you are on your last letter and you miss everything on an attempt at a new shot you skip a turn.

5. If you are on your last letter and you miss everything on a follow up you're out.

6. If you are on your last letter, and you have already missed a turn, and you miss everything again on a new shot attempt, you are out.

The last few rules really speed it up, and keeps people from doing too many stupid shots.

An extra rule we use when the kids are playing, or we have a shooter that's not very good. If you are on your last letter and you miss a follow up shot, but you do hit the basket, backboard, or rim you can take the shot again to stay in, or make the first person (original shooter) try again. If you miss on the second you're out, if you have the first shooter try (it's one or the other) and they miss you're still in the game. No skip, same order.

You guys are some hard core h.o.r.s.e. players. They only thing that mattered on our playground was the position and if you made it or not.

We're playing by the RULES now thanks in part to the clarification by BARF. Thanks guys. Now instead of arguing about rules, we're back to talking shit about each other's shots etc...

Can a player call a "double shot" where the shooter must make two consecutive shots in a row? I call bullshit. One shot only, any restrictions one chooses, but only one shot.

agree or disagree BARF?

We have played where you had to "perform moves" but not actually two shots.

For instance, you have to dribble between your legs twice, pass it off the back board to yourself, then do a lay up, all in one continuous "move".

or "You have to bounce it off the rim back to your self in an 'ally-oop' type move"

Never played a double shot variation... would say its a house rule if all agree to it

No. You can do some other stuff like chuck it off the backboard, catch and shoot/dunk kind of stuff. But never a double shot.

You guys have confirmed my thoughts on the issue, it's a bunch of HORSEshit. Of the four of us who play (Actually P.I.G. because of time) three want to veto.

Thank you for the replies!

This question is for people who know how to play horse (or in my case P.I.G. to accommodate a shorter game).

In horse if a player says the shot they are attempting must be a bank shot then the ball must bounce off of the backboard. If a player says the shot must be a swish then the ball must go through the hoop without touching the backboard or rim.

Question: If no specification is called out and the player shooting does not hit the backboard can the following player's shot bounce off of the backboard?

My contention is that if no specification is made before the shot then the following player may or may not let the ball touch the backboard.

Example: If a shooter does not call bank (or any other specification) and the ball touches the backboard, that was just a shot and the following shooter basically just has to make the ball go in shooting from the same place.

Halp

We always played that you had to call your shot. If you accidentally bank or swish some oddball shot, you can't hold other players accountable to that accident.
