Field Day 2013

Field Day is coming up soon!!

June 23-23 1800UTC - 2059 UTC.

I will be heading to the PAARA Field Day site in Menlo Park... at least, that's where they usually set up. If anyone is interested in joining me, let me know, we can all set up a time to head over together. Going to the PAARA meeting for June would be a good idea, since they will probably be discussing their Field Day setup during this meeting.

June 7, 2013 7PM - 10PM

Cubberley Community Center
Meeting Room H6

Palo Alto, CA

In for field day! Just got my general ticket couple of weeks ago and am playing around with my new receiver on HF. Quite different from VHF/FM. Good opportunity to learn something I think.

If there is interest, we can do a BARF field day with ride in to the location. I am happy to organize and supply HF and VHF gear and antennas.

What we need is a good location at the highest elevation we can find. As I mentioned previously, I have operated from the overlook off 35 as well as other locations in the Santa Cruz mtns and elevation helps, especially with VHF and UHF simplex.

The ideal location would be a picnic area or campground with a table we could use.
Any ideas/suggestions for a location.?

Look here, and AVOID direct paths. http://www.arrl.org/field-day-locator

There will be TONS of sights in use, and others sporatically placed. Believe it or not, if you can find a HUGE open area, elevated or not. You can get out well.

ie: Do it up in a HUGE parking lot (like over in mcarthy ranch area). That way you can get a lot of public exposure. And also bonus points (if your in it for that).

fwiw: I didn't see SCCARA on that list, which is usually up on Mt Madonna.

Ham Radio

Okay, two part question/post here

1. Ya a Ham? Sound off, callsign and any favorite repeater?
2. Need to get an antenna, for my enclosed trailer, to pop up when I have arrived at location. So size/wind isn't a issue. Magnetic I would guess is the easiest?

Go.

Yeah. Ran out and just did tech license and realized the General is going to have to happen.

Right now I just use 2m and 70cm. For mobile use I Dont think much else is needed.

Once a General, will expand the antennas for other bands for base station use.

Either of ya hit the WIN system?

I've never had my HAM ticket. I did hold an FCC Radio and Telegraph Operators Permit for broadcasting on AM and FM.

I've always waned to do some HAM radio shit, but have 0 clue about any of it and where to start. It seems like a fairly expensive hobby, from what I've been able to gather.

Can anyone point me in a good direction for complete newbs?

I need to charge up my FT-60 and get back out there. :D

I do have a programming cable and the FT-60 software now if we want to get together and program in some repeaters.

It was here in the sink a while back...

EDIT: Oh yeah, N6NFI repeater on 2m

Found that repeater, quiet except during commute hours.

I found the old thread for ya, B.

Thanks. I searched 'ham radio' in this forum and didn't see this. Shit.

N6NFI is a good one. Also WINS has a lot of activity. K6KYA 444.850 (+) 114.8 (in SF) or WR6ABD 442.900 (+) 162.2 (in SJ) as an example. International network on 2m and 70cm. Many other locals to choose from as well.

The old thread is in the sink, so it wouldn't have come up in your search anyway.

N6NFI has a daily net at 9AM called the 9AM Talk Net, haven't checked in in a while, but it used to be pretty heavily attended, and it usually went to about 10am or longer at times. Its wide coverage helps too.

PAARA is a very active club in our area, I've been a member since I first got my license. Field days with this club is fun! Meetings are held on the first Friday of the month. They usually have some sweet raffle prizes at the end of each meeting.

LPRC has a WINS repeater on 442.90+ (162.2PL) quite easy to hit from Mountain View.

I'll try to listen in on N6NFI more. I'm a night owl, so not on the radio too much at 9am.

Will leave the radio on tonight, see what I hear.
