Listen to the sound of the latest all-new Indian:

Nice opinion piece on Motorcycle Daily about the re-re-re-return of Indian, now backed by the great and mighty Polaris:

http://www.motorcycledaily.com/2013/01/2013-the-year-of-indian-motorcycles/

Polaris' Media guy, Robert Pandya, took the time to comment, a gemstone in the slop of internet-poster imbecility that dominates most fora (except this one, of course, ha, ha):

"2013 will be a big year for Indian Motorcycle for sure. The much anticipated new motorcycle will be revealed, and we show that Polaris Industries will indeed deliver on the promise of the brand. There are many technical options available for a new product, and there is certainly a vast history of Indian on which to reflect. The Staff at Indian Motorcycle and Polaris Industries is forging ahead with all of that in mind, and we are working hard to not only create the new Spirit Lake era for the brand, but do so with a perspective as stewards of this great American brand."

So. Will we finally see an Indian that doesn't look like something a Shriner would ride at a New Orleans funeral? A sporty street-tracker or standard, perhaps? Or will we get yet another $25,000 re-badged, restyled 800-pound, 60-hp monstrosity with tassels and valenced fenders?

They also had some vertical twins and small bore singles. Come back with 100 hp sporty vertical ala Norton would be a nice change.

Hm. I was skimming through this:

...and it sounds like the twin and single were flops...hardly the thing to celebrate. It'd be like Suzuki bringing back the RE5.

IIRC, the mains were undersized on the twin, and it was a grenade. Or something like that. :dunno They wanted to have a bike to compete with the Brit twins that returning servicemen had sampled, but the deal was kind of rushed. I thought the singles were just re-badged Brit stuff. AMC, Matchless, something or other... ?

Read the PDF I linked to. Very informative, lots of info, not great writing but incredible detail.

Yeah, working on it......

Yes, some were rebadged RE but my point was the Vtwin thing has soooo been done over and over. If they make yet another one they compete with their own Victory line.

A light weight high performance 750 would be nice. They (Indian) were known for racers, hopefully they can bring back some of the glory, not just more valanced fender cruisers.

This article says the new bike gets the stupid f-ng fenders:

http://www.forbes.com/sites/joannmu...-success-in-bid-to-revive-indian-motorcycles/

"The new Indian is being engineered from scratch, with new frames and new engines, as well as a handful of classic Indian styling cues, such as the war bonnet, the valanced fender and the engine’s exposed push rods."

:barf

Sorry to hear that, limits their market to cigar aficionados and argyle sweater vest wearers I suppose.

Another missed opportunity for a classic marque.

Are they gonna redo the tassles or are we left with the same old ones?:twofinger

Lol I am a cigar aficionado, don't wear argyle anything and think this is exactly what the world does not need. Go figure. :laughing

If this incarnation of Indian doesn't work, I'd rather see the marque fade to history since I'm getting kinda tired of the half assed attempts to keep it going.

So is Polaris going to shoot themselves in the foot? Victory and Indian competing against each other?

They should go straight up old-skool. Forget about going head to head with Harley, cuz it ain't gonna happen. And forget about doing some kind of sporty bike or standard, cuz they won't pay the billz.

What they should do is offer up straight up vintage look-alikes but that are reliable and start right up with a push of a button. Flatheads with fuel injection. From Scouts to Chiefs, but without being over-bloated cartoons. That would rule.

I wonder if Arlen Ness Victory will carry them?

Thats the bitch here. Polaris has all that FI two stroke snowmobile technology behind them, could make some cool dirt bikes. How about some big single or twin adventure bikes?

The world does not need any more cruisers...

What a bummer to see Indian get rehashed as the same garbage over and over again. Those indian 4's are beautiful. I ahve a friend with one. He has quite a few older indians and other vintage bikes. Raced an Indian at daytona in the 50's.

They really do need to make a vintage bike that's mroe reliable or do something like a bonneville but more racey. Kinda like a streetable xr750 that doesn;t cost as much or need as much maintenance.

Thanks for posting that link GAbe. Love reading about the history of some companies and where they went wrong and what not.
