height problems when riding?

Shoot, I know what you me because I am also 5'5, but you know what, I've seen a girl no taller than 5ft ride an r1, and she looked pretty confident riding it too. :)

Required Position of Equipment

27801. No person shall drive any two-wheel motorcycle:

(a) Equipped with a seat so positioned that the driver, when sitting astride the seat, cannot reach the ground with his feet.

(b) Equipped with handlebars so positioned that the hands of the driver, when upon the grips, are at or above his shoulder height when sitting astride the seat.

The dealers I've been to didn't give out this little tid bit of information when they start telling me how great the bike was.:mad
Maybe they didn't know either.

You'll find that the height difference becomes less of a problem the longer you ride. As you get better at making tight turns, you'll find it gets easier and easier to avoid getting yourself into situations where your short-leggedness becomes a problem. Avoid backing down steep driveways, and backing up hills, especially in oil. Also, your muscles will develop after some time, making it less of a problem to have only your toes down.

assnelbo is right,

I'm 5'2 and ride my R6 fine. I even have my suspension set up and taller race tires which made the bike even taller but took some getting used to like everyone is saying. There are lots of short man tricks you can pick up, like everyone is advising you about. Just take some time thats all.

i read somewhere in the short girl thread about riding that theres this 5'0" or 5'1" girl who rides a gxsr600.....if she can do it, you can do it!

yeah, that's me A.K.A sHorTy.

hey eman, you've got 4 inches over me. your shouldn't have any problems. you can definately do it, if I can do it. :teeth

haha ok, dang i thought i was short...i was a little worried cause i was at the dealership with my friend who is my height, never been on a motorcycle and he almost dropped the 600RR, woulda been a very expensive domino effect too if i wasnt there to grab it. Im not looking for a new bike, i cant afford it and even if i did i would cry to drop it so im going to be looking for a old 250r or a Fzr600. Mayb i should go ride my huffy around with the seat set to the highest setting to get use to it hehe.

Don't forget boots with a bigger sole. That'll help with the learning stage.

As others have said, height only matters for your first bike. Once you have confidence in your ability to ride, height (aka "touching down") is no longer such an issue.

FWIW, I'm 5'4. My first motorcycle was an 80cc Honda scooter. That was the only bike I've ever been able to flatfoot. Since then, I've ridden a 700lb Suzuki touring bike, 500lb Yamaha, 600lb Honda with pretty solid confidence in my ability to hold them up while stopped and of course no issues while moving.

You might also check out the Short Bike List Faq for some good tips for shorter riders (I highly recommend taking the time to read the entire thing)

Typically, a man will have a shorter inseam than a woman of the same height, so you can't really make a direct comparison of ability to reach the ground on a bike if all you know is a person's height.

I'm 6'2 and have my knees bent when im flat footed. Not severly bent, but they are relaxed when i'm flat footed. I can also flat foot on a KTM 520 (dirt) which is a tall bike. Of course this post does nothing for you guys. But I do find myself one footing it occasionally. Somwtimes its easier to one foot it than two foot.

Yeah that did osund a little funny. I guess I just assumed everyone would know what I meant.

I can come to a stop on my 04 squid special (gixxer 600) and be rest both of my feet on the fround. I can also balance on one foot also at a dead stop on my bike.
