As some of you may know, I crashed about a month ago. My head didn't come into contact with the ground too much but there is paint missing from the back of it. To my naked eye that seems to be the extent of the damage but I know it's a good idea to get it checked regardless. I like my head and don't like the idea of it not being protected as much as possible. Do any shops provide this kind of service or is my only option to send it to the manufacturer to get inspected? I'm pretty broke at the moment, so I'd rather do this before going out and buying a new lid. Thanks in advance.

Here is the damage to the helmet:

Sorry about not being able to get a better picture. This is the best I can do.

It might just be paint but even hairline fractures can seriously cause damage to a helmet. That said how paranoid are riding with it? If I went down and my helmet looked like that I'd get a new one asap.

I would replace it asap!!

My shop is clearing out our scorpions (like the one in your pic) and can try to get you set up. Not making a sales pitch, I dont make commission

I believe you can call the manufacturer, some will xray. That helmet I would shit can, however.

That helmet is toast.

Dont be cheap, is your head worth $300?

It is now a door stop ....
Get a new one .

Yeah, that helmet is done. The force required to scrape the surface like that is enough to compact the foam liner and that stuff is good for one use.

Look on the bright side, you just started your crashed helmet collection.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm going to go helmet shopping after work.

Hey man, was this the same crash where you tried making a u-turn and had the rear slide out on you?

In any case, see if the manufacturer offers inspections. Shoei, for instance, will do a free inspection if you send a helmet to them, and will even pay the return postage. Other than that, I'd buy a new one just for peace of mind.

Hey Nick if you're not squeamish about buying a used helmet there are deals to be had out there. I bought my Shoei X11 for $220 and it was bairly used when i got it. Check the gear section of BARF and search CL for helmets.
