My wife and i just moved homes recently and i've recently discovered that keys to my 1988 Suzuki Intruder 750 are nowhere to be found.

I've called a number of locksmiths already and none are able to come on-site for re-keying, and most say they don't even deal with motorcycles.

What's your advice on this? Can i get new keys made? Or do i need to have the whole locking mechanism removed and replaced? (Both for the ignition and gas cap).

Much appreciation for your help....

Call a different locksmith. I had a key made by just taking to him my ignition tumbler. Somewhere around $65.

20 year old bike? The Ignition is probably worn enough to start it with a blank key.

some bikes even have key codes you can order a key with, try this guy

http://www.motorcyclekeys.com/keys.html

pull any one of the locks off you can and take it in, if you have a one key fits all system. if you did not lock your bars, take the ignition one off, it will have a code on it somewhere for rekeying. anyone who does autos can do your moto if thye have a key blank. tell your local locksmith you can bring them a key blank and then order one or go to the dealer and get one... they cannot make you a key unless they have a blank.. and that may be why they do not do moto keys..

I don't know if you can do this, but try taking off the piece that holds the ignition (on a salvaged bike I bought once--it was the top triple) or if you have a trunk lock with the same key, and bring it to the locksmith. Cost me about $40.

umm...

most lack smiths will make a copy of a key for under 2$

make several copies...

and never have this issue...

i keep 2 sets of all my keys... and my mom keeps a set at her house...
i have a set of all her keys likewise....

Most hardware stores will copy a key for that sort of price, but you can't always be sure that the key will work afterwards. A Locksmith will charge closer to $5.00 and you'll know that the key is good.

Whenever I acquire a new vehicle, I immediately head over to the locksmith in Dublin and get copies made until I have at least four total keys. Then I make sure the best one is in the "key envelope" in my safe so I can always find at least one good key to anything that I own. If keys are lost and I have to take one out of the safe, I head to the locksmith first thing and get extra copies.

I've quit going to hardware stores for keys, because I want keys that I know will work.

yeap..

there is a locksmith in a local mall that'll do single sided keys for 3$ and double sided for 5$...

he also fixed my front door key for 7$ (it used to have to be held out 1/8 inch to turn)

or walmart does it for 1.30

Be glad you don't have a recent Beemer. The key blank is $80 (chipped) and supposedly the only place that can cut them (and program them to the bike) is the dealer.

They don't even give you 2 real keys with a bike purchase. You get one metal key and one plastic "emergency" key.

Dude stop bumping old threads to support your company wtf!?

I got a mobile locksmith buddy that re-key's keys for me all the time. He's located in Oakland but he will go to you. I think it's $80-$90 and he'll make you a few extra sets. He has blanks to match the grooves. PM me for his number.
