I tried to open a zipped file from a relative and don't have WinZip so I searched for a free zip-per and found jzip.

Now it's messing up my computer and I can't uninstall it - (it gives me an "Unwise.exe" file name under uninstall which I don't dare touch). :rant

My Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs" option disappeared!! :(

It tried to change my homepage, it took contro over many of my .pdf, .exe and other file formats with JZip icon and I must open it in JZip app. WTF!!!

I can't access Barf via my email links (if I get a PM or whatever...) - or any other site linked in emails. :cry

Aaaargh!!! :mad

I don't want to take any more advice - even on uninstalling - from just anyone online, so I'm turning to you pros - please advise!

Thanks,
Yana:banana

p.s. Is there a good, safe (free if possible) un-zipper that I can download or should I just stick with WinZip? I only need it a few times a year...

Been browsing the web about this (Googled "uninstall jzip") and on this site:

post #5 points to a 'helpful' site that my computer deems 'unsafe' - ?(came with a big red warning when I clicked it)... now I'm not sure if that's the jzip's doing or not, lol. :loco

I'll wait till I hear from a few of you, so I don't do more damage here... :toothless :laughing

If you bring your computer to Mt View, I'll take a look at it.

Yana, boot your PC into "Safe Mode" and uninstall Jzip. Once that is done, as the others recommended, Install 7Zip.

+1

reboot and press F8 of F11 (cant remember which) and boot to safe mode and uninstall. I usually roboot and just press both alternating. ( F8... F11... F8... F11... etc)

also......You can go into Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs & uninstall it from the list.
Then run CCleaner to remove traces of it.
+1 on the 7Zip

Others (via my Google search) advised strongly NOT to go that route - seems it still leaves the bugs in the system or something like that...

I'll try the F8/11 option first...

Keep the advice coming, I really appreciate it!! :thumbup

DL CCleaner, install it, then run it, look on the left hand side, theres an uninstall utility after clicking "Tools".
Then run the system cleaner & reg "Issues" to clean up junk remnants.

What OS are you running? You don't need an unzip program for Windows XP or newer, it is built in...

I can pop out later in the week and get it fixed up for you if you like.

Yes, XP.

The zipped file (pics) was not unzipping on its own, hence the mess I've gotten myself into... :toothless

When I rebooted into Safe Mode, it merely gave me the option to reset the whole computer into factory-fresh mode and I feared losing all my pics, favorites, etc, etc. :dunno

I'm a total newb & would rather do it right once and not muck it up further... :laughing

Would you like to borrow a laptop until your issue is resolved?

PM, phone or whatever. It's just sitting idle....

Unwise.exe is the uninstaller. It's safe.

IS it safe? Is that ominous name (and the .exe suffix) just to spook me away from using it? (it worked! :laughing)

Ok, so I'll use the CCleaner to uninstall it and any remnants (are those easily identified?)

When a company publishes their software, they don't usually create their own installation package, they use a third party for that. In the case of jzip, they used Wise Solution's package (now owned by Symantec). Unwise.exe uninstalls wise's installation of the software. I agree, it's not the best name.

Yes. It's safe. Use the unwise installer. Don't use CCleaner. Fighting unknown software with more unknown software is a bad idea IMO.

I did use CCleaner after doing some research on it too (didn't see your post till now).

Worked well to uninstall it.

Now my Barf icon (or any other) on my desktop still doesn't work - I get a
"This file does not have a program associated with it for this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."
That panel has any .url files set to open with Int. Explorer - as it should be. Now what?
I get the same message when I click on ANY link sent in any email, too!

EDIT - FIXED IT!! YAY! The Set Associations had Internet Explorer set under the ".url" which my Barf icon on my desktop had as an extension, but it also had a ".com" in it which was somehow set to an "Unknown Application"... Once I reset that to also open with IE, voila'! :party

Thanks again to all for all your help!! :love
