My 2005 CRF450R is in need of a valve adjustment, and I'd rather learn how to do the maintenance at home instead of paying a shop a large amount of money for a blind service being done. Anyone available to instruct me in the SF area? I'm fairly mechanically competent, but when it comes to engine issues, I have zero experience.

The bike is currently in San Ramon (parents house), but I can truck it to the Diamond Heights area (my apt), or your garage if you can help out.

In return for help, I can provide beer or cash.

Anyone want to help?

Shouldn't be too bad. All you need are some basic tools, feeler gauges and a torque wrench. You can have someone show you but the service manual will show you just as well, maybe at a slightly slower pace.

I'd offer but I'm compleatly backed up with bikes and work. I think they take the 7mm or the 9mm shims..

Here's some help--

Measure the lash first.

Then do the math to see which shims you'll need.. then see what shims you have and which ones you can reuse.

Then go get shims from AFM199 because he's probably got em.

Unless you have all the parts or a process in place, don't start.

it's really not that hard; especially on a single...(try it on a 4-valve 4/6) :wow

Get an experienced wrench/rider/racer to watch while YOU do it. Person can step in to advise/help when needed. (If I was more mobile I'd offer...)

After you've done it a few times, it's easy.... :)

You saw the OP's location, right? Marina, CA is kinda far from Oakland. :laughing

Depends on perspective?

For the LAB2V--> I drove 8 hours south to ride north for 500 miles over 2 days, then rode back 500 miles<in one day> and drove another 12 hours home..

This January I'll be riding to California speedway to ride for two days, race for one, then I'll ride back to Oakland after the race.

Marina is local, Holmes.
