Hollis in a coma, fundraiser, please help.

I didn't take it as rude. Thanks for donating.:thumbup
I checked with two of my friends that know her personally.
They tell me that her given name is Holli/Holly but she goes by Hollis.

Threw some $ into the pot. Probably ought to post this on ADV too, since a lot of those guys are world travelers, they probably can sympathize more with her plight.

For anybody else contemplating a trip in the future... http://www.medjetassist.com/

Thanks for the loot and suggestions.
That medjet service would be just the ticket. I'm going to contact them and see if they can offer help of any kind, like pointing us in the direction of a cheaper flight.
I went to ADV and then came right back here to ask you, where you think I should post. I don't see a general section, so what do you think?
thanks

I am talking to some people in India that I work with about getting her to a better hospital.

I don't know much about India's hospitals but the one she is in has rats on the floor and they are using dirty water. Is that the norm for India? I pretty sure it is not.

I am also looking into free emergency air flights to the UK. If anyone knows of one that would be great. We have 20k so far donated for the cause!

I've seen no mention of rats, where did you hear that?
She was recently moved to a better hospital, Harrison seemed quite pleased by that.
I'm not suggesting that you don't do anything, just trying to fill in the gaps.
I also talked to the medvac people and they have been working with the family and are looking for cheaper flights for Hollis.

Here is what Harrison posted on tuesday, early morning as far as I can tell, like 35 hours ago? He includes this line in the post, She is in exponentially greater care that immediately swung into action.

The mightiest tempest roaring through me. I can only go to sleep because all of you are there tucking me in and telling me I need to. I can only wake up and part the blanket of black fog that settles on my blanket, pillow and heart because you all pull me out of bed and tell me to stay strong. I am not shouting at my self to keep going. I am shouting in a billowing chorus. I feel you all and thanks isn't even applicable you are pioneering something that garners something new beyond even thanks. Yesterday I was vomiting, today I was healing her with my hands and my voice and song. I am a person of powers and invincibility forcefields and luck and I am pulling it down on her like a lightning rod. You are amplifying it like an arena rock soundsystem. I've kept her alive this far and we're going to bring her back to you. Last night we moved her from Pondicherry to Chennai. She did great. This is all so intense and surreal, especially when the ambulance brutally murdered the cutest dog. It was crushed into the grill in front of the passenger seat where I was sitting. I had some sort of flash back and was flung into screaming and crying but we got Hollis there. She is in exponentially greater care that immediately swung into action. The money and resources are pouring in. I feel that we are close. Lets get her to Stanford, please. I know everone is doing so much and using all of their might and powers but we need to step it up. Put it on the pirate cat, in the Guardian, on TV. Call famous people and find people or foundations to match funds. You can, I can, WE CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love and Strength. Harrison

Oh yeah, and Hollis is breathing on her own now!!!!:thumbup
and the reported total collected is now $26,344

I read it from the tribe.net which if any of you don't use I suggest you get off facebook and myspace then join a really good local thread board!

got this from Kimball on behalf of Harrison on behalf of Hollis. The blog isn't easy reading, but this is a lot more info:

Sorry to post semi-spam, but this is extremely important. Life and death, in fact. I promise I won\'t send out mass emails like this in the future

My friend Hollis got in a severe motorcycle accident in India, and is in a coma with a brain stem injury. She\'s been accepted as a charity case at Stanford medical center, but needs to get there. Getting an air ambulance from India to Stanford is going to cost upwards of a hundred thousand dollars. Any little bit helps. If you\'ve got five bucks or five hundred bucks, please think about throwing a little something into the pot. If you know anyone or any organization that is philanthropic, please pass the message along

Please go to www.friendsofhollis.blogspot.com and click the donate button.

This is the real deal, and 100% verified as not a scam, and this is not some forwarded piece of spam. Her accident was on the 24th of February, 2009, and it\'s me, Kimball, who is writing this all down for you.
Do what ya can.
Thanks.

Here is the situation, straight from India, as relayed by her boyfriend:

Hello friends and family,
So as many of you know, and many of you don\'t as I have not even
talked to you in a while.
I am in the midst of a crazy tragedy here
in southern India.
I was traveling with my sweetheart Hollis by
motorcycle and the worst possible scenario has unfolded.
She was in an accident that took a freak turn and I will spare you the gory
details (and they are gory) but end result, she is in a coma with the
most serious injury one can sustain.

She has a serious brain stem injury.

This is the part of the brain that controls and is connected
to everything. The accident happened at 11:30 am on Tuesday Feb.
24th, it is now 5:30 am on Monday March 2nd as I am writing this (I
don\'t sleep). This is what\'s going on... The treatment she is
receiving is okay, for India.

There are however huge rats scurrying
about on the floor.
I am sleeping on the ant covered floor outside
her room as I am not allowed in and the water they have used for many
procedures is not even purified.
Today as the final straw they would
not allow her own mother who has just flown here from Tennessee with
emergency support from the US consulate to see her own daughter when
she inquired.
She has been allowed some of the time but they sort of
shame you/ are mean to you to make you not ask for visitation.
They are not observing her brain pressure and have done nothing to
alleviate the swelling in her brain.
These are things that can make or break her early on in her recovery and healing process.
Her chances are slim.
Her chances are slimmer here in Puducherry, Tamil
Nadu, India.
So we miraculously got her accepted to Stanford which is one of the best hospitals in the world.
Also, as a charity case which is very rare, since she has no insurance.
So what we need now is to get her there.
I am reaching out to everyone I know to help us get an ICU Plane (a.k.a. air ambulance) to fly her back to California.
If anyone knows anyone with a plane we could rent or has anybody in the Air Ambulance industry or a doctor who could volunteer their time to
come and get her and fly her to Stanford and reduce the cost... those
things would be amazing.
The reality of the situation is that we need
to raise $150,000 dollars, now for the quote we have.
There is a blog that Hollis\'s best bud Eliza (from her bicycle dance troupe the SF Derailleurs) started: friendsofhollis.blogspot.com and it has a donate button on it.
I would like to urge everyone to give something to this button even if it is 5 dollars and then pass it on to everyone they know.
Hopefully we can all figure out a way to give $1,000 whether it
be by sheer generosity or organizing a fundraiser where ever this
reaches you.

Send it to people who know her and send it to anyone who
is a compassionate person and knows what its like to lose a bright
brilliant star of a person.

She is an amazing performer, heart, bicycle and food activist and so much more, in San Francisco (and everywhere) and we need to do everything we can while we have the
possibility, to bring her back.

It was crazy to go through my contacts to select everyone to send this to and see the amount of amazing people who are no longer alive on it and how badly I don\'t want to add her to this group.

Please help however you can even if its just keeping her in your thoughts and sending healing energies and magic.

You can write me with any questions or support or call/text
anytime, day or night.

Thank you more than anyone can be thanked, for everything you have all done so far, you have kept me going in my darkest hour.

Please forward this on.

Put it on myspace, facebook, your blog, craigslist, tribe, tell everyone.

love and teary thanks,
Harrison

Then, she should be covered, but we have a post of terrible proportions after this one.

What gives?

If you need a hospital that will take her for NO money, I know of a couple. They are Christian hospitals. One that I have supported.

Please post the plane trip information and where she is headed.

Thank you,

da' clutch.

Hollis is not covered - yet.
The terrible proportion post was from an earlier report from Harrison.
I believe he has updated the situation in a later blog post. www.friendsofhollis.blogspot.com
The post that mentions the rats was from the day before.

$26,344 is 7.6 % (edit; - umm no it's not % sorry) of the $200,000 needed for flight and other costs.
The woman I talked to from the medvac place told me that the flight alone might be $200,000 They need to update their website where they sell their insurance and mention that medvac from overseas can cost $75,000. I think a lot of people wish it were that price now.
Hollis is breathing on her own but still in critical condition and in a coma.
Hollis has been moved from the rat hospital.
Hollis still needs to be flown to Stanford, where I believe she is already accepted as a charity case. Rare occurrence.
The above is how I see it right now.
As long as people post in this thread then it will stay at the top. Hollis needs all the help we can give, go Hollis!

Wouldn't it be cheaper and easier all around to bring her to the UK where they have one of the best neuro hospitals around? Doesn't the UK have to front the bill once she is there? A ride in a truck is much cheaper then an airlift right?

Why are they trying to bring her to Stanford? I know it is a great medical place but there are better and closer ones that cost less and are probably easier on her then coming to America? I know people want to see her and all but is that really the best option for her?

Just curious as I know I don't have all the answers and I am just brain storming here.

Oh I just read that Stanford would front the bill. That is AWESOME!

thanks to all that keep chipping in. It is being noticed!
Here's the latest from http://www.friendsofhollis.blogspot.com/

We are getting a donation every three minutes.
Can you believe that?

That's incredible!

There is a link to the story on Fecal Face, on the SFBG.com, Laughing Squid, Bay Area Riders Forum, etc., etc.
This is what is helping us.

And because I know you are curious:

Harrison Update-o-rama: Good News!
Just got off the phone with Harrison with an amazing update.
He said they have COMPLETELY taken her off the respirator and she is breathing by herself 24 breaths/minute.
They took out the venus monitor that went down her throat and directly into her heart to measure the pressure. Her heart rate is about 100bpm with great pressure.
They took the stitches out of her left ear and it looks great. He said it looks like she had some sort of piercing, but it's not freaky like his post about the accident might imply. He said her color is returning and the swelling in her face has gone. She is starting to have her body back for herself. I am sure she is happy about that.
The doctors say if she continues on this path, she is on a quick recovery route. If she continues to improve then she might be able to take a commercial flight to Stanford. That being said, with brain injuries, it is always a mystery how long and how people recover.

He also wanted to clarify:
The Times of India article denoted that the family was not satisfied with the hospital care in India. This applied to previous hospitals. APOLLO HAS BEEN ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL and they are going to try to convey that tomorrow when they have another interview with another newspaper.

Keep her in your thoughts. Go to a benefit. Donate something to the silent auctions. Take a yoga class at Mission Yoga or The Caretaker's. We're bringin' Hollis Back. YOU are helping.

About that.
WHO WANTS TO KNOW THE NEWEST TOTAL??????!!!
(ooh! me! Mee too! Over here, I want to know!)

$41,150

Our goal is $200,000

->A special thank you to the millionth power to all 836 people who hooked a sister up<-

Let's just put this into perspective:
Yesterday, when I began accounting the day's total, it was $17, 500. The day before that we were at $4,500. I am now going to sleep knowing that the money more than doubles each day because of how many people are letting their friends know about the situation. This is a true testimonial to the power of the interweb and the new age of information.

I am in India ...I could visit her but Chennai is little far from Pune. Just sent some $. Please let me know if I can be of any help.
