Horrific crash at Thunderhill today...RIP

WTF?!

I dunno what to say......

I remember watching a rider go off the front straight once at Thill. It was my second time there I think. This rider went off track at what seemed like full speed, but probably AT LEAST 120 mph or so. His bike went for a ghost ride up the hill and he tumbled for quite a ways. I didn't think there was any way he was going to walk away from that one and quite frankly it scared the living sh*t outta me (being only my second track day). But....

after just a couple of seconds he popped up onto his feet and put his hand in the air as if to say "I'm O.K.!" I couldn't believe it! I was sold on track days from there on. And even when I crashed after 15 or so track days I was amazed at the moderate injury I walked away with (some broken ribs and a bruised lung and scapula) considering the speed at which I crashed. But this thread really takes the wind outta my sails. :(

Godspeed to our fellow rider, and my condolences to his friends and family.....

I hate to hear about this. One minute you're here, the next minute you're not.

Sometimes I wonder if riders think that they are going too fast to make the turn and instead think it'll be better to just go up the hill in the dirt.
Either way....we'll never know. I'm sorry for the family and friends left behind.

I was there Saturday.

...I dunno, not much to say, it's just terrible.

+1 - was there with WSMC831 on Saturday, and I think I remember who Matt is. I don't know him by name, but by face...

:rose Godspeed Matt. RIP. :cry

This news sure makes me that much more thankful/respectful of our weekend, without incident.

Sigh.

Oh geez that really sux. I was up there on Saturday and there were relatively few crashes. It's shocking to hear when someone goes off in Turn 1 especially if it's a solo incident. My condolences to the family and friends.

I came up to T-1 just as I saw the bike stop moving waaaaay up on the hill. Terrifying. They red-flagged the session, I came in, waited for some news, and then packed up and left.

My thoughts are with his family and friends. A sad moment for the entire community.

Wow, that is tragic.

I went off at turn 1 at my very 1st trackday. got comfortable enough (i.e. lost common sense) to try and look at my speedo on the straight, looked up and thought I was too hot to make the turn. Target fixated on the gravel. Shot straight out at 70-90mph. steady slow braking and lots of dirtbiking experience allowed me to keep it up and turn around and get back on the track.

I can only wonder if there was a medical condition for him to blast that fast and far straight through?

Also, isn't between turn 1 and turn 2 where fr0ng went off and sat hidden for a while?

Shocking and sad.. God speed to the fallen rider and condolences to his friends and family.

Yes, but fr0ng had already turned and made it through T1 when he went off, thus ending up on the other side of a hill, mostly hidden from view.

Matt's line was literally right off the front straight.

Many possibilities. Health condition? Brake failure?

My sister emailed me this morning from N.Carolina, enquiring if I knew Matt. He worked for the same company as her.

"He worked for Extreme Networks as a "systems engineer" - a guy who would go to customer sites and help with selling gear or to figure out what was wrong with gear they had already bought and help get it fixed. He was one of a few in the company who could do that across all the different products we sell - a really good guy and good to work with (not an ass). Really sad."

Condolence's from my family to his. GP

That is a bummer in many ways..

Godspeed Matt:rose

Hope the family and friends can stay strong and warm memories of Matt endure in the hearts.

Also to Lance and Linda.. I am sure they are reeling as well.

UGH!! I feel sick...

I was there yesterday and heard he had pulled through. This is just the worst I've ever seen at the 100+ trackdays I've attended.

RIP

:( Very sad news. I feel bad for Matt's family and friends. I'm sure this tuff for Lance and Linda as well.

RIP
