how come cops don't wear full gear?

protection ... they got the vest on yo!!!! .... mustache .. rayban aviators ... those korny boots ... .. all say ....village people ..(cops) .... got to love em ...

This is about the only reason I am hesitant to put in for motors. Well that and the fact we ride Harleys at my department. But if I do decide to ride for a while, I am going to be looking at the underarmor to see if I can wear it comfortably under a long sleeved uniform. Between that and a leather jacket I would feel fairly safe. I would always wear gloves as well.

The aspect of what our officers wear has always bothered me. Well trained or not, at some point you are likely to go down on the job. Riding 9-11 hours a day puts you at greater risk and there are too many chances for taking a spill. Wearing short sleeved shirts, lightweight uniforms, and open faced helmets is an open invitation for major roadrash.

because:

1) whiny little hippy cry baby Califo....um, citizens would think the popo's were stormtroopers in full riding fear.....

2) beuracrats don't want to spend the extra $$$ to protect our LEOs but when their kid's pink bicycle gets ripped off, they want the entire force looking for it....

3) politicians crying about budget cuts and laying off the police/fire depts so that they can spend $15k on a new office desks for themselves....

They should wear full-faced helmets with a mustache glued onto it.

I met a motocop last night and asked him the same questions. About the helmet he said that that has always been the way it has been. On the elbows and pants they have double stiching to prevent tearing away.

However I was at Kushitani shop and the guy showed me a jackets designed for moto-cops that were pretty light.

Cochese

Walnut Creek and Pleasanton oinkers are VASTLY overpaid. I'm refinancing a WC pigs house right now. Pay them like the rest of the lousy public servants we have to tolerate and I'm sure there would be more than enough money created over to revamp their gear.

Nice attitude. Hope ya never really need an officer.

I think certain gore-tex uniforms could be made to work, but obviously the need isn't there or else someone would have done something by now I'd think.
I crashed a hang glider wearing Gore-Tex. I think it offers similar abrasion resistance to single sheets of newspaper. Of course, you could always put armour under it.

Bike cops in the UK always wear full leather or textile motorcycle gear. In black. (EDIT to add that they also always wear hi-vis vests or jackets over the top). Maybe it looks scary if you're not used to seeing it, but then, if you've got a bike cop after you in Blighty one of two things is going to happen.

1) You pull over, and (s)he'll remove their helmet before approaching you.

2) You run. And you can't get away. And the bike cop only needs to keep up with you long enough to give the helicopter pilot or stinger wielders time to take over.

Either way, I can't see that "not being scary looking" is a reason to offer your flesh up to the tarmac Gods. I'd be mighty peeved if I was an MC cop of any description being told to ride in plus fours and a smoking jacket...

Another $0.02...

Having crashed in full-leathers, I can state for the record, that I probably did my fastest ever 100m dash chasing after the fucker that knocked me off, before my bike had even stopped sliding - and that's NOT an exageration.

Most moto-cops are CHP or mostly involved in traffic, so the 'chasing on foot' argument would seem to be rare, at best.

And if mobility was their primary focus, then we wouldn't see fat cops anywhere...*cough*.

I think a skinny cop in leather with all their bits working is going to be able to chase down someone faster than a fat cop in lycra...

Working the hand gun? They make gloves with very thin leather. Won't help a lot in a high-speed off, but they do make a big difference in low-speed slides (I know from personal experience).

Heat issue is a non-issue - they make light colored, vented leathers that keep you cooler than wearing nothing in the hot sun. If you're chasing on foot, that's another story - but those are emergency only cases.

I think the CHP not being in decent gear sets a bad example for everyone - 'hey man, even the cops don't wear gear, I'll be safe'.

Even worse, reading in Performance Bikes about when one of them gets nicked for a 30mph wheelie, the cop is all 'what you doin wearing leather? Goin racin?'.

This attitude that gear is only for racers/people intent on speeding has to stop. Gear is for protecting your fragile skin from the (sometimes) grippy surface you're riding on. End of story.

I can fully answer this question for you:

Because we don't, quit worrying about it, on the average very few motorcops go down and even then, its very low speed. Most accidents on police bikes do not involve much road rash, but usually do involve broken bones, that any type of armor would not have saved you from.

It has nothing to do with what the individual officers image is. It does have to do with public perception. The public in california has such a problem with police having functional equipment that they are willing to sacrifice the safety of officers, just to keep us from looking scary.

There you are, that is your answer.

To the person who said....hey, they get injured and we have to pay for it. Yes, and I pay too, and I have to pay into workers comp when your ass gets carpel tunnel (spelling sorry) and cant function at work cause your hand happens to have a little pain in it.

To the shithead who said we are overpaid....Get stabbed (like I have), get shot at (like I have) and go back to that job every week for 30 years, knowing that you are going to put up with that kind of behavior from people.

You ever invite a cop to your house to say hi or have a cup of coffee, NO!

You "invite" us over when you can't keep control of your own life. You invite us over when you have "usually" (and not everyone, im being jaded at the moment) made a personal fuck up in your judgement and cause yourself a mishap. Yes dumbass, you need to take your backpack to the bathroom with you in the cafe....dont leave it at the table while you take a shit in the bathroom....It won't be there when you get back dumbass. The fact that you had 10 credit cards, 1000 dollars, your laptop, and a pocket pc is just YOUR fuckup for leaving it there. So, quit bitching at us because you fucked up and left your shit laying around!

End of rant...sorry, tired of hearing the overpaid thing, when I barely pull down enough to cover my bills, after taxes.

But the gear thing. I don't think there have been enough bad things happen to motor cops for the state to want to pay to change it. I know for a fact that if the state started buying us 1000 dollar protective suits and the media heard about it, there would be nothing but outcry from the public on the "waste" of money the taxpayers are being forced to pay.

But then again....stop giving handouts to people who refuse to work, because they know they are going to get a handout from the state...and maybe they could foot the bill from that.

brash

You have mojo for that.

I wouldn't be a cop even if I was allowed to, and even if they really were overpaid ( and I happen to think that whatever a cop takes home isn't enough).

I don't like police in general, and I don't like the fact that we need so many of them. But that isn't the cops' fault... Anyway, rerail.

Cops should wear decent gear. IMHO. :teeth

Think about what your life would be like without these "lousy public servants," you selfish prick. You'd be crying for someone to help your pathetic ass when shit gets ugly. Now go back to your office and do whatever useless job you do.

The cop I met at the diner showed me his right hand which mostly had new skin after he got hit by a drunk driver going 70 mph. On average not every cop gets shot at either, but that doesn't mean there should be no bullet proof vests. Same should be the case for protective gear for moto-cops.

It has nothing to do with what the individual officers image is. It does have to do with public perception. The public in california has such a problem with police having functional equipment that they are willing to sacrifice the safety of officers, just to keep us from looking scary.

So how come there are scary looking fat cops around? :twofinger
Seriously I have never heard of people complaining about leather clad cops ... except for the ones seen in Castro :teeth

Brash you are invited to my house and have a cup of joe. Now there you don't have that excuse no more :)

The oregon cops where Aerostitch in the winter time. Summer time is squid time. I asked him about flow-thru stuff. He had no idea what is was and even if he did he spouted the famous bueracrat line: budget cuts.
