I'm thinking of drilling into the back of my airbox, under the rear fender above the shock cover, and hanging my plate there. It's high enough above the wheel to see it clearly, but I really don't want to get a ticket for it. Anyone come up with a decent way to mount their plate?

Do you still have the Ugly stock tailight/fender assembly? The one I have is a LED tail light that comes with a small fender to mount the plate and turn signals.

Baja Designs and DRC both make some nice LED units. The DRC unit (from wheelingcyclesupply.com) seems to be the latest craze...and it's a damn fine product.
If you're hell-bent on not getting pulled over, put your plate where most people have it and light it well. Mounting it up in front of the rear tire is just asking for trouble IMO.
Looking legal VS. asking for a ticket - it's up to you. Personally, I prefer to look as legal as possible...including the 'dummy' turn signals.

just remember that when u sit on the bike the plate is gunna disappear behind the rear wheel. mount the plate vertically on the rear of the fender like a mud flap.

Although in SF I've ridden monster wheelies, done maniacal lane splitting, and ride at Mach 10 right by cops and they don't even look up from their donuts. (But, I am a touch more careful in the SOMA area where the moto cops hang.)

I live in SF and after getting pulled several times for having my plate near the airbox in front of the back wheel...I decided to hang it between my pipes on the Duke II. Haven't had any trouble since.

+1, although I took it one step further and used some shears to trim the plate down. I followed the little lip on the edge of the plate all the way around. It takes off about 1/2" and looks alot cleaner. I doubt any LE's will even notice. I've done this on my last 3 bikes and it's never been an issue...

Prolly not but that is the angle of the dangle of the DRC Edge out of the box.
