One of my friends wants to reboot his computer but has no real skills, neither do I but im going to try to help. So he has all the program disks and whatnot I just dont know how to start. Also is this really all the hard? I mean Ive heard people can do it pretty easily.

Any help would be great or if there is even a site with a step by step process. thanks:teeth

reboot = restart

goto start menu. select shutdown.

in the dialog box, choose restart

wait for it to restart.

Reboot or reinstall the operating system?

'Reboot' means (in most cases) to just shut it off then turn the power back on.

To reinstall, pretty much back up any data that needs to be kept, then boot from the disks and follow the instructions. It's not hard, but takes a bit of time, depending on what OS is used. For step-by-step instructions, your OS vendor should have instructions online somewhere (it'll vary between particular OS versions a bit).

reinstall the operating system and he has windows vista if that makes any difference.

kick it lightly with your boots on, then kick it again. That should do it.

If this is a brand-name PC, and not custom built and one of the newer models, there is a great chance that the whole Windows Restore point is located as a disk image on a 2nd partition.

From there, it's mostly 1)backup your pictures and documents. 2)run the restore program. 3)click yes to continue. 4)click yes to continue and this is your final answer.

the system will reboot, and you'll be off from where you started, as if the PC was just unboxed from day one.

Otherwise, you will need to bootup off the Windows Install CD. To do this, access the BIOS by following the on-screen prompt on the POST screen. (usually, this is DEL or F8).
Then go to 'boot' and select your CD or DVD rom drive as the primary boot device.

Then you are on your own, but it's mostly, click next, click next, click next. and so on....
Really though. it's easy.

Mods, could you change the title of this thread from "reboot" to "format"?

OP: It all depends on the PC that you have. If it's a name brand and depending on age, you'll either have a partition on your harddrive that will have the data and tools to bring the PC back to "like new" meaning it will wipe your system or try to do a "repair install". Every manufacturer has a different method of accessing that partition. All of them are usually done during the initial boot process but it's usually something like hitting the F10 or F11 key. At least one of the Function keys. It will usually give you an option to do a safe install or a full install. Full installs usually mean that it will wipe the system.

Older systems usually come with a (or several) discs that you use to do the same thing.

Honestly, your best bet would be to search on a search engine using terms like "computer model number" "OS reinstall" or "reformat" or "restore". You'll be able to get more specific information that way.

If you don't feel comfortable doing it, there are plenty of smaller shops out there that will do it. Just avoid the Geek Squad like the plague. And make sure you back up any important information before you do ANYTHING!

Here is a link that walk you through the reinstall process. Make sure you backup your important data before you begin.

Reinstall Vista - The reinstall guide is at the bottom

Since no one else asked, I will . . .

Why does your "friend" want to reformat his computer? Most people not in the know, will elect to reload windows just because something isn't running right. It's usually a simple fix to get the computer running properly. Unless someone tried to "fix" the computer and totally dicked it up, there are very, very few reasons to to a format/reload. :nerd

wellllll....they probably called Dell Tech Support where the first question is [hindi]"Have you reinstalled Windows yet?"[/hindi] :laughing

Thanks guy, he got this computer for freer from his brother but there are tons of porn and Im pretty sure he has a virus. Someone said that reinstalling everything will pretty much get it back to a clean slate, is this ture?

Well, yeah, but...he'll lose the porn! :shocker

Yep, that's the best thing to do here. Don't worry about backing anything up. Just format the puppy and get it back to square one.

Don't reinstall / repair -- depending on how it is done it might just repair damaged files but leave everything else intact (including the pron aidz). Clean this thing up with a complete Format and start with a Virgin fresh system.

I haven't done this with Vista but with XP it is something like this (from memory):

-Before doing anything, save yourself some time and find out what hardware is installed (video cards, network cards, etc) and go download the latest drivers and burn to a CD from a "clean" computer (other than your pron computer).

-Boot from the Vista CD making sure you have a valid product key before starting (may need to set the BIOS to boot from CD).
-Depending on options presented select "Install" rather than "Repair"
-At some point it may ask if you want to use "existing partitions" or "delete and re-partition" -- choose re-partition.
-Now you may have a choice for a "quick format" or "full format" -- choose "full format". Quick only wipes the FAT table and leaves old data in place while Full format blows everything away.
-Let 'er rip. Will probably take about 45minutes or so to install.
-After installed, use the driver CD you created before starting the process to update the drivers for optimal performance.

This is probably missing a few steps, as I've never done this with Vista, but you get the point.

For mor help Google is your friend. Here is a helpful link for installing Vista:
