How do you pass a background for a police dept

My understanding of the hiring process, no matter what agency it is, the applicant has the right to see the reason for failing the background.

I'm not exactly sure who they have to petition, but I'm sure that the agency has to tell you why you were failed.

Legal disclaimer: I'm not in backgrounds. :teeth

Sorry Rel, but no they don't.

Hey hey BigJ, it was only a small flock of sheep, and they all needed lovin. Besides, don't be h8n because mine was cuter than yours. :laughing
Baaaaaaaahhh
:party

1000 sheep in the heard- and you picked the ugliest one!

The best way to pass is by being truthful in your packet and statements. A good personality would be helpful as well.

Sorry Rel, but no they don't.

yeah. don't think some agencies tell you, so that the information doesn't go out and someone else "masks" any of those faults that they are trying to keep out of their agency. yes? ie, the applicant can then change those attitudes and go to another agency. :dunno

Also we ask employers, neighbors, friends, and relatives all kinds of questions about the applicant. If they knew the applicant would be told what they tell us, we wouldn't get honest feedback.

Its interesting how their is always a couple of smart asses that like to put in their two cents in. Explain to me why you guys try to be brave online but then in person act like you are an angel? lol

You only know what we want you to know, and please........ stay on topic ;)

OP, if you really want to know, do some real thinking about your past.

Turns out, I'm pretty much blacklisted in the state of California for as long as I can probably imagine due to an event that I honestly thought was not a big deal at all. Problem is, regardless of the fact that I was never charged with a crime whatsoever and I have the documents from the investigator that proves the attempted accuser was full of shit and admitted it after the fact, and putting aside the fact that I've never lied about it or hid it from any investigator, I never got hired by a PD and I was advised that I probably never will be. I came close one time...made it to the top two finalists for the position. They went with the other guy. Years later, I talked to the now retired police chief from that department and he leveled with me and told me that he couldn't hire me because of that event, regardless of the fact that I was never charged with a crime and it turns out the allegations were proven absolutely 100% false. He told me that departments and cities can't take a chance that things in the past of their public employees could be used as political fodder and apparently, my situation fell into that regard. Still, my background investigator gave me the nod. Go figure. He told me that a lot of investigators talk to each other as well so keep that in mind.

Eventually, I had to throw in the towel and use my backup plan to go another route for a career. Don't get discouraged, but be realistic. You should always have a backup plan.

Look at it this way wicked, would you really want to live in a city where police officers didn't pass or had disqualifying information on their BI? Its a huge liability for the the dept and the city if said officers get into trouble.

The cops have alot of power and I'd opt for a smaller dept of quality LEO's, then a larger dept of lesser qualified officers. I think even the cops themselves would rather sacrifice quantity for quality.

Attitude can be adjusted. One's background cannot.

As many have said, all else being equal to that point, the cleanest background and/or a family history of LE will get the advance at that point. If one is offering only a laundry list of defiant excuses and apologies regarding one's background, then you aren't hero material.
Butcher, baker, candlestick maker is a better life choice. Hell, You can even pretend to be a past indian chief on your application without it being a crime.:laughing

:rofl Classic! plane gray's equally sarcastic in person btw.:cool

I didn't have a "laundry list" background, but I've been out in the world too. You can't expect someone who's not 21 and living with their parents to have a perfectly clean and/or virtually blank background. However, I was told twice that that's pretty much what those particular departments were looking for. Not just a spotless background, but a blank one. Hey, if they want a police officer with no life experience or leadership history, I guess they'll get what they pay for. :2cents

Best part for me was when a police chief interview I had following my background investigation contained the following statement, "Hell, I haven't even fired my weapon outside a range in my 23 years of police work. You've already got me beat on weapons engagements and taking fire!" I didn't know if I should laugh with him or congratulate him. :dunno

Majority of police officers will not fire their weapon outside of range/training.
