Finishing up my mom's estate, I have what they called in the olden days her hope chest. This thing is hand made mahogany, old and must weigh 125 + pounds. Looks like a big trunk but made from wood.

Anyhoo, I'd like to send it to my eldest niece up in Seattle and have zero clue on how to go about doing something like this.

Pallets, straps, and wrap. Get quotes shipping UPS freight or Fedex Freight. Easier for most folks due to the customer service and tracking.

There are also lots of smaller freight companies to choose from as well.

considering it is relatively light for its size, the small package specialists (UPS, Fed-Ex, etc) will charge based on size, not weight - and will be expensive. you need a freight forwarder that can put you on a moving van (semi tractor trailer) that is either set up LTL or has a full load with a bit of extra space. try freightcenter.com or similar, and shop around.

$325 up to $2000 depending on who, how, and how fast I want it shipped. Good info site, thanks :thumbup

Let me check but I have a buddy going that way in a month-he could probably drop it off.

Next time you see a moving semi pulled over go talk to the driver. They are often the truck owner but work contract for large moving companies.
They can often fit it in with a load headed that way for 1/2 the cost of the moving co rate, if you pay cash.

I had a good experience using uship.com. Had a transmission shipped up from AZ. It was cheaper than greyhound and amtrack, which were both cheaper than ups and fedex.

I also shipped a trailer to someone in Tx who used uship. Hope this helps.

You can also take stuff to greyhound and they'll deliver it to another greyhound station pretty cheaply. It's been a few years since I did this, but it came in handy as a traveler.

As LB said, DO NOT use FedEx or UPS freight. They are painfully expensive and plenty of other companies offer tracking.

Search for local LTL (less than truck load) carriers and get quotes.

What he said. Try Air Freight. UPS is too expensive.

I've had decent luck with uship.com. Individuals and businesses bid on your job. I shipped an awkward Dana80 dually rear end this way through a one man hot shot business. I haven't had very good luck getting decent quote on an oversized painting though. Worth a try

125 lbs sounds like a small body, are you sure you want to trust moving this "hope chest" to non specialist ? They might drop it, and something could roll out . :thumbdown

This.

That's worth a case of beer or three. :teeth

I shipped motard wheel by greyhound, i remember it being cheap but don't remember how much. Some craigslist dude sent me a check for the wheels without ever meeting me, trusting bastard, and asked me to ship greyhound.
I wrapped them and dropped them off at nearest station. Whatever it is it obviously has to be able to fit inside the small storage under the bus.

Some good options provided. One more is household goods moving company's. It costs them the same to drive a 1/2 loaded truck as it does a fully loaded truck, so they will often accept a smaller shipment such as yours. Delivery times may be longer that FedEx, UPS etc.
