How important are track tires...at a track?

I enjoy using race tires on the racetrack, and street tires for the street. It's as if each one were targeted for a specific mission...:laughing

Will running just plain Michelin Pilot Power (not the 2CTs) be a big mistake? Im thinking it wont help me any...but how could it hurt if they are good enough for street

I have heard some people say they feel faster on the track with the regular Pilot Powers because the edges dont over heat and get greasy like the Pilot Power 2ct's.

2CT's are still a good way to go for the track just be careful you dont get the Road 2's...

clutchslip you are dead wrong. race tires do not preform as good as race tires on the street in the hands of a noobie. how will DOT race tires perform on a cold October-Decemeber morning? Or in wet conditions? WHy do experinced trackday goes take off thier race tires and put on street tires for wet trackdays?

street tires are made to handle the VARIOUS conditions on the street, are cheaper, and will last longer then race tires.
You have added a bunch of specifics conditions. If I am so wrong then how come Triumph has not been sued out of business for putting DOT race tires on their sport bikes?

Each tire is different. All you people that think that one race or one street tire is the same as another are not very sensitive to your rubber. I am only talking about tires, by the way. :p

I ran 2CT's on my first trackday at Thunderhill with no issues.

Read this since you seemed to of missed it;

but the OEM supercorsas are not the same as the race tires you will find trackside, similar to the power races at say cycle gear and the PR series from a vendor

My first trackday I used street tires, they worked good. Then by the end of the day I kept pushing harder, then got into trouble at T-hills turn 3's off camber right hander. Tried to enter 3 at around 100 in 3rd gear and ran in to hot, just tried to go threw with it and ended up spinning up the rear because I held the throttle on. I bet if I used the dot dunlop 209 gp spec tires I pobably would have made it without crashing. I had holes in my suit and in my fairings. Expensive mistake! So you can use street tires but humble yourself at the track. If you want to go fast use dot race tires, if you got deep pockets use slicks with warmers.

that's about 20mph faster than even the fastest guys i know.

if I was going 100mph at t3 i would be braking all the way to t5 =)

for me, running a set of race dot is a confidence boost. even though, technically, i know i'll be fine with street tires. i trust my pirelli supercorsa's :nerd

2ct where fine for me for a few trackdays or so. But yes race tires will give you more confidence and a better feel. Either tire you go with, just be sure to take it easy an warm up your tires for a lap or two before you start picking up the pace. Usually whenever some one bins it the first lap or two... its always because off "cold tires":rolleyes :laughing

Im on the DOT race tire bandwagon. I ran Power Races at every track day since day one. (im on my second set now). The main reason was consistency. Slowly refining my skills on my goal to runs with the a group, and then hopefully on to AFM, was made easier by riding on tires i am familiar with. I did experience a learning curve when i switch to the PRC front tire, took me a whole day at T-hill to get comfortable with the triangulated tire.
