How important is it to have your jacket zipped to your pants?

My pants and jacket (diff. brands) have a zipper at the back that looks like it's supposed to connect them, but fuck if I can get them to mesh. So I ride around worrying that if I crash and end up on my back the jacket's going to slide up and I'll sandpaper my back.

I see plenty of riders wearing a riding jacket with jeans, so obviously they're not too worried about it. And they're not out there in a tank top, so they've made their call with at least some thought to their safety.

Am I trippin'?

If your jacket is loose, especially mesh or textile (more flexible) it would be very easy to slide up.

My jacket is leather so I feel more secure in it, but I would still zip it to whatever pants I wore if I didn't have a one piece for the spirited riding.

If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can always get a seamstress to sew a zipper between the jacket and pants you normally wear :2cents
Shouldn't be terribly expensive, assuming they don't have to put their sewing machine through the leather itself, then again, I don't know their rates.

Shops that repair leathers aren't going to charge much to sew those easy access zippers on.

And what''s up with deciding how good or bad something is because you see others do something? You don't have to go far to see total idiots. That doesn't mean anything to you. It's your well being that is everything to you.

Look at it this way , the minimal cost of getting a proper zipper system sewn up is nothing compared to the cost of getting roadrash cleaned and treated , and that's without taking into account the pain and suffering associated with said roadrash.

And insofar as it goes , what does what someone else is doing have to do with it? It's *your* skin isn't it?

Yeah, fair enough. Seeing lots of other people ride with a jacket not secured made me wonder if it really would ride up my back, or if I was worried about nothing.

Thanks for the input, I'll see about that zipper.

Just make sure that when you crash you slide face first, then you don't have to worry about your jacket riding up.

based on my experience from a 30 - 45 mph lowside, with an un-connected 2 piece jacket/pants combo, you should be ok. Of course each incident is unique, but if your jacket fits properly theoretically it should stay put.

I imagine there are folks here with a contrary experience.

i went face first. airborn over the front. it didn't stop with my face. by the time i stopped sliding, i had about a 4" diameter hole in my hip. sheared the top of my pelvic bone flat. the damage was so severe they said they should have done a skin graft, but there wasn't enough meat left to stitch to, and it wouldn't take. i'd attach pics, but they're too gross. wouldn't have happened if i'd have zippered up.

I've had great luck with Johnson Leather's in the City doing just that.
I havent been there for a while and hopefully they've weathered the economic termoil.

ouch

I have been wanting to get my two piece made to attach to each other, but how does one go about zipping the zipper near the tramp stamp? do you do this while the jacket is off or is it easier than it seems it would be while wearing? kthanks

I usually wear a one piece siut. Now I have a twp piece I just keep zipped all the time. I commute Uvas and Hecker pass. Too big and fast a road to be in half ass gear.

Actually it's really easy. At least my suit is....

I was joking, but sorry to hear about your damage. Painful >_<

Easy enough to do while wearing. It's maybe a bit awkward at first but you certainly get used to it, like tying your shoes.

I thought I was OK with jeans and a jacket in the past... even wore knee/shin pads under the jeans for extra protection. Then I crashed hard and the jacket rode up my back as I was rolling across the pavement. I only received a small abrasion, but it still bled and hurt like hell (worse than the broken bones received in the same crash). Four crashes later, all of them in full leathers... not a scratch on me. So to answer your question... nope. You are not trippin.

What if you crashed without a helmet.
Would you say the same thing?
Maybe not.

Get the zipper.
Cheap insurance against going to the (more expensive) hospital.

I always get attatched gear. If they. Didn't make it attatched or they are different brands and the zoos don't mesh I get that taken care of. The feeling of security is worth it alone.
