How many riders switched to LED headlights from halogen?

Brightness is not the only consideration of a good light. In fact, a very bright light, poorly aimed and distributed, can be far worse than a light with less output but is properly aimed and distributed.

True. But I’ve taken the trouble of actually learning about lighting and the designs thereof. There are plenty of people who are ignorant on the subject of lighting. I fight against that ignorance.

As with the electricans thread (among others), you probably shouldn't make such absolute statements about subjects that you only think you're an expert in.
 
I am not an expert. But I do know things that others don’t.

For instance, “upgrading” a halogen designed lamp to HID often results in much brighter lighting. However, if that light isn’t aimed and distributed properly by the reflector and lens it can reduce one’s ability to see further out. Your eyes adjust to the bright light as you pupils close up which reduces your ability to see into the distance. The same is true for LED’s.

Reflectors and lenses must be designed for the type of bulb that goes into them. The light emitting part of the bulb is shappedcdifferentlyvfor each bulb type. It’s physically impossible for an LED or HID bulb to emit light as halogen does. Regardless of brightness. The glowing parts are simply different.
 
STguy You're going to hate this. I replaced halogens in my ST1100 and they work VERY WELL
There is a distinct cutoff of light where it should be and when I hit High Beam it is impressive how much light there is.

Well, you definitely think you do. But you clearly don't know what you don't know. Not everything on the internet is accurate... especially not 10 years later.

You know, I literally don't consider myself an expert at anything... not even the things I did for a living for years! Which is why I don't use statements like "you must", "you can't" or "it won't".
When I give advice, I like to use "it's been my experience", "I've always found", "I'm not sure, but I think" or... wait for it... "I don’t know."
Maybe give those a try, it might increase your credibility.
 
Car manufacturers know this stuff. That is why the reflector and lens designs for the three bulb types are different. One might think they could simply put different bulb types in the same housing but they can’t. If they could, they could save on manufacturing costs.

Each bulb type requires a different reflector and lens design.

I think I may have gone a step farther than you have. I actually purchase, install, and test the HID and LED bulbs in my vehicles. Occasionally I discover they don't work as well, but sometimes they work better. This ratio of good / bad has been my experience with headlamps(25% success rate). The opposite is true for my experience with tail lamps and brake lamps (90% success rate).

Something you may relate to:
I used to have an R56 Mini Cooper S. I upgraded all of the incandescent rear facing lighting to LED bulbs with great success. The housings were completely filled with light, and they were brighter. A side benefit was the 'instant on' is proven to reduce the reaction time of following drivers.

I've done the same with the rear lighting on my Ford E350, and my Corvette. The thing is, I upgraded the headlamps of those cars too. I had to test a few different bulbs, but they work. There is a crapload of confirmation bias by people that purchase and install shit bulbs, I've tried to educate friends and neighbors. Some listen, and some do not.

As I said before, it isn't cut and dry.
